The 5 Second Rule

Monday, August 06, 2007

Ok so we have always heard the saying if your food falls on the ground it’s ok to eat if it’s been less than 5 seconds (a.k.a. the 5 second rule), but how true is this? Fact or Fiction? After a little research my discoveries where (not surprisingly) FACT germs do collect on food at the moment of contact…however the longer it sits the more bacteria will collect, some food are more prone to germs faster such as bread as opposed to a hard candy, but in the end if you drop it you probably shouldn’t eat it. Do you live by the 5 second rule?

This is very true food collects bacteria the moment it comes out of packaging so if you drop it on the floor thats 10 times worse you shouldn't eat it.

I don't believe in that rule .. It's gross. 5 seconds or not.. if it falls just leave it.

I have two dogs, so it is rare that I have a 5-second rule opportunity! If I could, I probably wouldn't, unless it were the last piece of chocolate in the house.

If you have ever eaten food in a restaurant (or really anwhere that you haven't prepared the food yourself) you ARE living by the 5 second rule! Probably more like the 15-20 second rule. We are never going to live in a germ free world. Better build up a tolerance!

it doesnt matter how long it hits the floor for, it will still have the same amount of dirt on it. They had this on mythbusters.
