Tennis Star, Tennis Starter

Monday, September 15, 2008

Ok so you may have watched the Olympics and most recently been watching the US Open, and been thinking…hmm that looks like fun, maybe I could do that? Well, that’s exactly what I thought (although making it professional may not be in the cards for me). A little background for you, I have never really participated in recreational sports, I did more of the ballet and jazz dancing thing, so I thought why not try out sports now. And what sport have I signed up to start taking you ask, none other then the sport with one of the cutest outfits (such a girl comment) but Tennis! So who better to ask for advice then Tennis Star Andy Roddick! I got the chance to meet up with him at the Macy’s Lacoste Event, and asked him for some pointers. It was hard for him to narrow it down to just one tip, but he said “have fun and just watch the ball”. Easy enough right? I guess he can’t give away all his secrets LOL.
So ladies, if you could meet any athlete who would it be and why?

I would love to meet Art Monk formerly of the Washington Redskins. Having grown up in the DC area, I have respected his community work, his Christian views and how he handles himself on the field in tenious situations. I have admired his work ethic and morals for years.

I'm stoked he came back and I would LOVE to be on the sidelines to watch him do what he does best! Plus he's kind of a hottie!

Half marathons. I must have completely lost my mind. I've never run any long distances. But, I'm doing it for a great cause, so I'll be running 13 miles in January in Orlando for Canadian Diabetes Assoc. Check out my blog at http://www.netchick.net for the latest details. Or, maybe just to see if I died from excessive running? ;)

I grew up hearing about baseball. My grandpa was always watching the Chicago Cubs play and he stayed a true fan. I was never interested in the sport until I was in High school and a new softball team had just formed. I joined and hated it but my coach pushed me and slowly I began to love the game. I too became a big baseball fan and loved watching the Cubs play. Carlos Zambrano is the athlete that I would love to meet. He is just such a great pitcher and that being my position I would love to meet him and just talk baseball. He is also a big name in the Latino community and just that alone is very big he is an outstanding athlete and pitched a no-hitter game last night!

If I could meet any athlete, right now, I would want to meet Brett Favre so that I could ask him why he really felt the need to come out of retirement. It really bothers me when an athlete make a tearful and supposedly heartfelt announcement that they are leaving the game they love, only to come back just months later and reverse their decision. To me it appears that they are only after the media attention and the possible addition financial gains, and it cheapens their reputation.

That is awesome that you met Andy Roddick!! He is such a great tennis player. Tennis is one of my favorite sports. I actually played tennis throughout my high school years and made it to the state tournament my senior year. I've always enjoyed playing tennis and still do. It is a sport you can play no matter how old you are. The athlete I would love to meet is Andre Agassi. He was an awesome tennis player. I remember watching so many of his matches. Other than the fact that he is so great at tennis, I think he has such a big heart. Him and his wife, Steffi Graf are dedicated to raising money for the foundation they started. They love to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. And what an awesome feeling it is to know you are making a difference in someone else's life. How great is is to know you are creating a brighter future for so many deserving kids!!

I am sure everyone will say Michael Phelps, and don't get me wrong, I would love to meet him...but the inspiration of Dara Torres, the 41 year old mother who has now competed in FIVE olympics. NOt only did she compete but she medaled!!! What an amazing woman, mother and athlete. What a role model to all the women out there that say "I am too old"! Way to go Dara! I would love to know what drives Dara and how she balances her training and being a mother!

I would love to meet Dara Torres. She doesn't let anything stop her from reaching for her goals! Even though she's in her forties, she went to the Olympics and won three silver medals! I find her so inspirational and I admire her even more for being able to be so active in her daughter's life and still pursue a career. There were swimmers in Beijing less than half her age, and some went home with nothing. Her dedication and strength makes her an amazing athlete.

Hi Achelle, You didn't specify "living or dead". Therefore my choice would be BABE DIDRIKSON ZAHARIAS. Although she died in 1956, she is still ranked #2 by Sports Illustrated for the TOP 100 Female Athlethes of all time. Your readers should check her out. She was amazing! Her specialty was TRACK & FIELD, and her career began in 1932 in the Olympics and spanned 25 years! She also was the Top Female Golfer of her time. She ended her career by winning the 1954 LPGA Golf Championship by 12 STROKES, and this was a year after surviving cancer and having surgery the year before. So please, have your readers study her, if they want to know about athletes. Male or Female, I doubt too many athletes could have stood beside her!

I am a huge volleyball fan so I would just love to meet Kerry Walsh and Misty-May-Treanor. How awesome would it be to get tips on how to dig, spike, and set the ball up so your opponents never knew what hit them. Volleyball is not a wimoy sport and it takes a lot of strength to keep up especially when there are just two of you covering the whole side of the new. Kudos to the ladies, they were awesome in Beijing.

Roger Federer. He has a grace about him. He is confident but not cocky. He has been able to consistently produce results. He doesn't seem to be dating around (or looking for the holywood model type) just because he can get anyone he wants which points to a strong character. So overall he has teh right balance of confidence and humility, strength and dedication, commitment and faith. I respect him all around and so I would want to meet him rather than someone like McEnroe, whom I only respect for his athleticism and not for his character as a man- though I am sure he is more fun than Federer in some contexts :-).

I would like to meet, Eric Liddell (Chariots of Fire). Why? Because of his dedication to his sport and his beliefs. I am not a runner. I don't even like to run, but I can appreciate his talent. The rest of his life was so rich in helping others and his missionary work that I would like to have an hour or so to talk with him about how his sport influenced his future actions.

I would love to meet Nastia Liukin, who won Olympic 5 medals during this last Beijing Summer Olympics. I would love to meet this 17yr old girl to ask her how she managed to balance the rigorous training and at the same time being a teenage girl. On the more personal level, I would ask her if she feels deprived of "living a normal life" and how she feels about this great accomplishment of winning 5 olympic medals and how this impacts her view of herself as an athlete and as a woman.

If I could meet any athlete, I would want to meet Lance Armstrong. My family and I watched the Tour de France every year when Lance won (all 7 of them!). It still amazes me that he competed after surviving testicular, lung, and brain cancer and WITHOUT doping, which is more than can be said about his fellow competitors.
