Trash & Treasure

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Some say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  Well, one artist is putting that to effect.  Jason Mecier is a mosaic artist that has some creative pictures, like a Mariah Carey mosaic made out of makeup or an Anna Nicole Smith mosaic out of trash and newspaper clippings.  Talk about creative!  To check out more of his work you can view at jasonmecier.com.   Have you ever made anything creative out of your "trash"?

And for every valid web comment on this blog only we will give you a Free $5 e.l.f. coupon via email just to say thanks (1 per person, to the first 100 posts only).

My son had a dress shirt that required cufflinks, so I found 4 similar buttons (the extra ones that come with blazers and coats)and sewed them together in pairs and had homemade cufflinks!

I think it is part my creative side but also part how my Dad and I can usually figure out a new way to use something or fix it when needed. We love doing that. This can be called altered art,trash-junk to treasure or whateva. I just call it me. :) FYI if anyone else is into this and the elf mods say it's cool,I'd love to chat with other bloggers here about this. It's so much fun to learn new techniques and ways to do this besides just going for it,which is fun to of course!!! Thanks ELF

My sister had a ton of old t-shirts from high school and college that she doesn't wear anymore but didn't want to throw away. She cut them down to squares and made a quilt out of the pieces. It turned out great - now she can remember all the things those t-shirts commemorated without having a drawer full of unworn shirts!

Something creative from trash?! I try to do it all the time. In our current state of the economy, reducing, reusing, and recycling are my must-dos. Some things I've done with my "trash" were: 1) created a whole beautiful photo album using shipping cardboard (as the structure) for a friend's birthday, 2) always reuse paper clippings from used paper for different styles of decorations in other projects, 3) created a small notebook from old gift-wrapping tissue and, again, used cardboard... etc. All these items were to go to the trash bin, but I just couldn't let them go to waste, literally. Therefore, they've all been collected and sorted until another crafty project comes about.

At first I couldn't tell it was make-up that he used to create this potrait. It looks amazing & so much like Mariah. Great Job.

Truly creative, perfect for this day and age of recycling! When I was younger, I would sew my own skirts and aprons from old/unused curtains. Can you say scarlet o'hara?

I love taking left over colored tissue paper that I get with holiday gifts or given to me in shopping bags at stores and making art with that. Instead of throwing it out I cut the into small squares and roll them up with my finger to make tissue balls. Then you just glue them on to an image or sketch for really cool 3d pop up art.

I know i'm really late in the game to buzz in on this, but I am SOOO in love with my new apron I have to share! If you have an older pillowcase (especially maybe one of grandma's old ones) and love the pattern but it doesn't fir into your modern bedroom style... they easily can turn into a cuuuute apron! I'm not sure of rules on posting links here but if you google "pillowcase apron pattern" you will get free results and it is Easy! Enjoy :)
