Laura Mercier & Achelle chat about makeup!

Friday, March 20, 2009

I think it is always good to keep an eye on the beauty industry.  I love makeup (obviously) and I love to chat with other brands to hear their secret beauty tips and get the inside scoop.  I got the opportunity to meet up with the charming French makeup artist and business woman extraordinaire Laura Mercier the other day and thought I would share.  Laura Mercier, for those of you who don’t know her, has been in the business for over 30 years, she is well known for her long list of celebrities that she has done makeup for and her brand “Laura Mercier”.  She started off as a painter and brought that same creativity into makeup, as she would say “makeup is like painting the face”.  Some of her tips that I thought were brilliant are as followed:
-Makeup is a recipe just like cooking, you need to experiment till you find the perfect blend.
-With your mirror, stand a few feet from a window when applying makeup as this will provide the best natural light for putting on makeup so you get a more accurate and beautiful look.
-Never apply foundation all over the face unless needed.  You want to always have the appearance of healthy natural skin.  The best thing is to just put a few spots where necessary, like around the nose or a few dabs on the cheeks to even out the complexion.

Thanks Laura for your great tips!

The experiment advice is definitely right. I am almost 32 and just now figuring out what looks best on me. However, as for the foundation thing, I can never make it look right by just putting it on it certain areas. Even if I make sure the color is almost perfect for my skin. It still seems to look wrong. I keep trying, but no luck. Maybe you could give me some help/hints on this.

Great tips...one I use for myself is for blending foundation...You can blend almost any foundation easily into your skin...by either wetting you applicator(no matter what type used) with water or a clear moisturizer. Even if the foundation is a couple of shades off your skin tone the mixture with water or moisturizer will make the foundation more sheer to meet your tone. and the coverage will be buildable.

I love the "Natural" Look too! So many times I'm walking around in the grocery store (with their hospital type lighting) and I see alot of women with make-up that looks so caked on. Such beautiful people too, really takes away from their looks (their natural beauty that I would love to have been born with!) Anyway, It's really nice to hear a make-up artist admit that TOO MUCH Make-up is just not the look anyone wants.

A good friend of mine met Laura Mercier in New York several years ago in a department store (I think it was Macy's or Neiman Marcus). She told me Laura was very approachable and was more than happy to talk to customers, even those who have never heard of her before. My friend never got the chance to thank her, so maybe this is my chance to help her thank Mercier. Have a great day!

I too feel that makeup is very similar to painting. I have heard that some people acutally use Lowell Cornel painting brushes that you can buy at craft stores as make up brushes. I feel that makeup should be used an accentuation to what you already have; not a cover or mask to create what you want. I feel that a lot times people view wearing makeup as an insecurity (like you are discontent with what you have) but really I feel it shows effort and confidence in yourself to take the time to look more put together.

Iam completely excited about the elf line of makeup. I received my first order not long ago, I ordered several things I have not had and am trying new things. I am going to use the mirror by the window trick and also the foundation thing. I am looking forward to my next order and trying new things. I also love the blog, any type of suggestion is awesome.

About the last tip, the foundation tip is very true. actually the only time i use concealer or foundation is to cover my dark circles. n the e.l.f. concealer works very well to cover it up under and around my eyes. =]

ya..i have also found that that applying makeup in the bathroom mirror is a mistake....the light bulb will trick u into thinking its lighter or darker than the makeup actually is...which is embarrasing sometimes...so be sure to look at yourself in some natural light before u go anywhere or do anything.. :)

Hey, I <3 elf! i mean its cheap, the quality or some products are AMAZING and some are even better than the cosmetics in Sephora ELF IS AMAZING!!!!! i <3 it, im not cheap or something, i jus like good products for a good price, which is what elf is! The only thing is that elf has really expensive shipping cost in US :( but it doesnt matter! Just a short tip, combine honey and sugar together, if you have blackheads on ur nose, honey and sugar is the best solution!

I think I'll try putting my make up on near a window from now on because I hate that when I do my make up in the bathroom I love how my make up looks but as soon as I step outside it looks completely different. Thanks for the tip =)

People have told me over and over to apply a concealer or base all over my face - I'm glad someone ( and someone who knows what she's talking about) finally agrees with me - you want to look natural - just smooth out the blemishes, right? Right.

I had no idea not to apply foundation all over the face. It makes sense though to create a flawless glow. Thanks for that tip!

I have very red cheeks and when I put make up on it really looks fake. I have tried a lot make up and nothing looked good. And to make everything worst, I break out with a water base foundation if I used it. But the thing that I have found is that, if you put foundation on and your eyes look amazing, by putting a little bit of bronzer under the eyes and above the cheek bones makes everything look better. The eyes are perfect and the skin looks good. No more fake looking skin.

Thank you for the tips! I always applied foundation all over my face and now I know that I shouldn't. However, if I only apply it on certain spots than wouldn't that look weird because it's not all blended evenly?

I am just now really starting to wear makeup and I have placed an order for some of the e.l.f products and I was glad that I actually looked at the blogs because I didn't know that you shouldn't use foundation all over. Keep the tips coming

I did not know this, but it makes so much sense. I have always applied foundation to my entire face...maybe that's why I end up looking like a clown :) Thanks for the tip!
