Ralph Lauren...I mean Tommy Hilfiger

Thursday, March 19, 2009

So…this is completely embarrassing but I had to ask. Have you ever had a major brain fart moment and accidently called someone by the wrong name?? Well I totally did. So I was on my way back from Jamaica and I had a celeb spotting…Ralph Lauren. I thought I would introduce myself and maybe take a picture. So as we were there waiting for our luggage I quickly chat it up with him I said in a shuffle “Hi Ralph, I know this is a total faux pas but would you mind if I get a picture with you?” etc etc. He kinda throws me a questionable glance but was very sweet and takes a pic. Ok…so as I walk away I think to myself, hmmm I don’t think that was Ralph Lauren but Tommy Hilfiger. Ahhh the humiliation I totally called him the wrong name. In my defense I was tired and had a cold, not that I am trying to get out of this one, but oops. So Tommy if you read this, I’m sooooo sorry, thanks for being a great sport about it! Guess we all have a few blunders here and there LOL.

You aren't the only one with moments like that! I've had too many to count. One blunder moment I remember though, wasn't my brain fart but rather my boyfriend's mother when referring to me. For the first few months of our relationship she had a habit of calling by my boyfriend's ex's name :( Embarassing yes, but needless to say have not so subtle reminders she does know and REMEMBER my name!

I wouldn't worry too much about calling him by the wrong name. He still took the photo and was polite about it all, so I'm sure he was more amused than anything else. We've all been there, so don't sweat the small stuff. :)

At least, he was nice about it and didn't make it into a big deal. Some celebs can be really rude about even being bothered for pictures, let alone calling them by the wrong name. I was at JFK with a couple of friends, and we ran into Julianne Moore. My friends were big fans and went up to her. They were really polite, apologized for bothering her but asked if it was okay if they could have a picture. She gave them a nasty look, said absolutely not, and turned her back on them.

Oh man that is totally embarrassing! But I feel for you. There have been several instances where I have used the wrong name and so now I just use a greeting that does not have a name. That way I can't use the wrong one. Given, the greeting is a little impersonable but hey, it saves the embarrassment :)

How awsome is that. I love the products and everyone I know does too. You all at E.L.F. must be so proud to provide such a great product that really keeps us looking good in the bad economic times. I think name recall errors happen to the best of us! I know it has happened to me plenty of times. I had a job interview with a man named Marco; trying to follow proper interview procedure I decided to write a thank you email. It was the perfect follow up email except for the fact that I put "Dear Mark" instead of Marco. I was horrified to realize it a second after pushing the send button. I sent an apology email to correct my error; fortunately I did get the job! I know my best friend was in an interview for Kmart years back and the person conducting the interview asked "why do you want to work here?" and my friend responded "Because I love Walmart, I always shop here." I guess nerves get the best of everyone!

Oh my goodness, Tell me why I had a simular but a not exactly the same experience? LOL, I was at the super market, and there was a man in a Mariners outfit (local base ball team in Seattle) and I go up to him and say "Hey are you a real baseball player" he looked at me with sarcasm and said "NO". It was one of those air headed moments I tend to have, but your not alone. I called out many people by different names also. hehe.

Forgetting someones name seems as though the person is preoccupied...Oh I am not in defense per se of them, however I discovered recently that there is a name or names (i.E. reasons) for the sudden and embarrassing moments. We ALL from time to time forget even our best friends names and the term for this is 'Anomic Aphasia' ~ The simple social faux pas that many have as a concurrent thread in their actually has a name. The more stress put upon this the more one is more likely to forget. I had been doing reserach and stumbled across this. Yes often someone can be tired or so excited that they just cannot quite grasp 'That Most Important Name..." and that is it...I figure now that I am fully aware that it has a name and I smile to myself hoping that now I know that it wil not again happen to me, well I will just have to wait and see...Now what was her name....? (kidding...!!!) Anomic Aphasia, what a classy pair of words to bolt us out of the common embarrassment. Indeed I had to laugh when I read it. Make sense and it is a great conversation topic to share with...."What is his name....?"

Yes! It was so awful. I once called my new boyfriend by my old boyfriend's name. I don't think he actually heard but it was really stressful for a few minutes after because I kept thinking that he would end up realizing what I'd call him. Thankfully he never did.

I had something similar happen to me. I was in Hollywood with my sister and we saw a Latino actriz. We stopped her and asked if we could take a picture with her and we did. We didn't even know her name but we had seen her on tv. That wasn't the problem. She was with her boyfriend, a tall dark man. My sister whispered to me that he was a famous latino singer. I believed her so I went over to him and told him I loved his music. He just smiled at me with a confused look in his eyes and says thank you. After that I walked over to my sister and I just see that she's laughing her butt off and she tells me, "that wasn't him!" I was so embarrassed but I do have to admit it was funny lol

God that must have been quite an embarrassing yet hilarious moment! Though I have never misidentified a person by name, I always can't remember their name for one reason or another. They can be close friends, or they can be hi-bye friends, but whenever my weird-dysfunctional-awkward-brain-lapse kicks in, I could be striking up a conversation and be saying, "Hey Ah----, Juh------, Mar----,....." only to realize I have momentarily forgotten their names, and be left with "Hey ah..juh...mar..joh...le...".

I think it's ok to blame it on your physical condition! Here is what I did once: I was working at a small country store when a lady came in to return a rented video. When I opened up the log book, I saw that I had rented it to "Mr. Smith" the previous evening. I said "Oh, you must be Mrs. Smith!" She made a terrible face and barked at me "I am not, we are not married!!!" Open mouth...insert foot. I think the only thing worse, is asking someone when they are due and they are not pregnant!!!!
