Am I a warm or cool? This seems to be one of the biggest questions in cosmetics. Understanding which tone you are will help identify which makeup colors are best for you.   Here is a simple breakdown.
 
If you are a Cool also known as a Summer or Winter:
Your eyes are typically blue or grey. Hair color is typically blonde, brown or black. Skin has definite blue and pinkish undertones. You look great in “jewel tones” like blues, greens , pinks and purples. Your foundation is most likely a pink base.
 
If you are a Warm also known as an Autumn or Spring:
Your eyes are typically brown, green or hazel. Hair color is typically brown, black, red, auburn, blonde or strawberry blonde. Skin has yellow/orange or olive undertones. You look great in “earth tones” like yellows, oranges, browns, yellowish greens and orange based reds. Your foundation is yellow based.

ok, so where do i fit in? brown eyes, brown hair, and i look great in most colors (just not kelley green!)....i seem to remember a trick where you took a piece of paper and held on the backside of your wrist to see what color your skin cast off. i think pinks meant warm tone, blues were cool, but dont quote me!

Although I'm cool, with blue undertones, I find that wearing many types of greens make me appear quite sickly! In general, jewel tones work, but not greens necessarily, due to the yellow in them and the overall colour changing relative to my face. Despite that, I sometimes like a warmer pink eyeshadow because the pink balances out the yellow enough. I use the ELF mineral eyeshadow in Sweet a lot because it slightly warms up my face and doesn't make me look jaundiced.

I didn't learn about my color palette until I was in collage and let me tell you it makes such a difference! Now, whenever I go shopping for makeup or clothes I always keep in mind the colors that look best with my features and skin tone. This is one of the best information pieces a girl can have about herself.

I never know what I am either! According to this blog I am cool, but I have been told numerous times that peaches look good on me. I don't think so though. I am blonde with blue eyes and I really think pinks are more my color....Peeches seem to make me look sickly! Thanks for the interesting blogs...keep them coming!

This is a wonderful post. I am 27, the mother of four boys, and am just now starting to care about makeup and the way I look. It turns out that according to the information in this post I have been purchasing almost all of the wrong colors for my skin tone. Thanks to you I will now know exactly which colors should work best for me. Although I admit that making the switch to more lively colors is going to be a big change for me.

Thanks. I most of the time stick to the same colors for make up. Like browns, blacks, greys, and some light reddish browns. But I'm a jeans type of girl... so most tops are a bold color, but I stay far away from greens since my skin tone cannot really pull it off, being brown eyed and dark brown hair type of girl. :) I guess I'll have to try out some of these other colors you pointed out.

I am a warm. However I have found that with a little experimental time, I can usually mix any combination and come up with something that looks great! If I don't like what I have come up with I will keep playing until I like it.

I fall into the "cool" catagory. But to tell you the truth i find it hard to stick within the suggested colors for my catagory! Lol. I love all the colors. But I have to admit the colors in my catagory do look better on me than the colors that arn't in it.

Turns out I Am both a warm and a cool. My eyes are crystal blue most of the time bit sometimes a hazel grey. My hair is medium brown in color and my skin has pinkish and some olive undertones. Jeez, no wonder I get confused when picking out makeup!! At least the chart and info above has helped me figure this system out a bit better. Thanks. :)

I am for sure a warm tone person. I am Asian so I have very dark hair and eyes along with yellow undertones in my skin. I do find that more neutral earth tones do fit my skin better than the bright cool toned shades. I find it a little hard to find foundation sometimes being that a lot of them aren't yellow based so when they go on they look a little too white or chalky for my yellow skin. I have found lighter mineral powder foundation is easier to match since it delivers a more sheer finish. Although, I have heard somewhere and it was probably wrong advice that blue/purple shades can bring out brown eyes.

I am certain I am a "warm" tone. I have hazel eyes...dark blonde...yellowish tones to my skin. I do find that I look best in browns..greens..and even some oranges. I like my makeup to be subtle...but with the attention to my eyes. I like to wear soft taupe browns and accent with shades of greens and even mauves. I like a youthful foundation but a well defined eye and a neutral lip.

This is always intersting to me. According to this description I'm a warm tone, but I generally look terrible in many of the colors (yellows, oranges, and browns) that are on the chart and look great in most of the cool colors (purples, bright greens, and blues).

I am warm. My hair is brown, my eyes are brown,and i have a olive skin tone. I typically go for the earth tones-like browns,oranges,and reds because it compliments my skin tone perfectly.

I am a warm color person, and also a person of color (smile). I know this before I saw your color chart. I want to say how happy I am with all the products I have ordered. I was sent your website about 6 - 8 weeks ago, and took a chance and placed an order for 14 items. Sure enough when my products arrived I was extremely pleased and actually tickled pink. I just love the cream eyeshadows and look forward to applying them each morning. I have order again so I can have a backup for the colors I use most. I remember seeing this a long time ago. So "Thank-you" for the refresher. It's no wonder why some colors look so good against you skin.. and other just doesn't do anything for you. I have always had difficulty deciding whether I was "warm" or "cool", and thought since I was blonde w/blue eyes, I was a "warm". Maybe it is time to try the "cool" as I do tend to choose those colors. Thanks so much.

hmmm... I'm still not sure if I'm a cool or a warm. But I've always been drawn towards jewel tones. I have green eyes and my natural hair color is dark brown. I have pale skin but I'm not sure what my undertones are. I've heard that if your veins are blue then you are a cool and if they're green then you're a warm. But my veins on my hands and wrists seem to change colors all the time so that doesn't really help me. Is it possible to be both warm and cool? Am I a neutral? I do find that most foundations are too pink for me though. Oh well, the quest continues...

I am warm to a "T", hazel eyes, brown hair, olive undertones so much that I need a tan to look any thing other than olive haha. Would my skin look sickly if I went platinum blonde instead of my normal dark brown? (i have short, short hair)

The posting got it wrong. I'm a winter - my skin is warm (yellow base) and I therefore look best in white, black and cool (blue tone) colors. If I wear yellow or orange, for example, it makes me look even more yellow. But a cool color balances out the warm skin tone. The test is to place a very warm (yellow) or very cool (white) color under your chin. You'll see the difference immediately, and the wrong color will glow on your chin.

Well here's a question... I've got red hair and green eyes, but have enough ruddiness in my cheeks that most foundations look far too yellow on me, while the rest of my skin is very pale and many foundations just have too much color regardless of tone. Any thought on what tone I am, or do I get to pick and choose? :D

This post is very helpful. I've owned cool vs. warm color swatches for awhile, and it seems the trend is more muted vs. vivid colors. Take red for instance, red is considered a warm color, but adding a tiny amount of blue to it will make it "cooler" so you cool people can wear it well. Same for warms, but adding a small amount of yellow to the red makes it a reddish-orange to make the red "warmer". And don't forget us neutrals who can generally wear both sides give or take a few colors; and to think, "am I a muted or a vivid color wearer".

Years ago I worked for Avon and we would drape people with fabric and do the whole nine yards to figure out if they were "cool" or "warm". I always considered myself a warm, but during a conference they decided I was a cool! Now I'm thinking I'm a warm again by my hair (brown) and eyes (green). I just know that I look better in richer colors as opposed to light pastels or white . . . unless I have a tan. I'd love to have my colors professionally done!

I am both warm and cool. I have blue eyes and pink undertones in my skin but I have auburn hair. I look good in just about all colors. I can pull off the cool colors very well but I also look good in yellows and oranges. I can't wear bright reds because it washes me out, but other than that I can wear just about whatever I want.

it is possible to be both warm and cool, it is called being "on the cusp" I stick to more neutral colors myself and play up with my favorite colors, like Corals and violets and golden greens...

I was draped at a store once and told I was a winter. I look best in black and jewel tones and washed out in pastels. I've got green eyes and ash blonde hair and I think I look ok in autum colors.

Thanks for the breakdown. I always tell my friends that I don't wear reds and blues very well and that my undertones were green and yellow. I wear a lot of brown and green. This is very helpful.

hmm, I guess I've always been not the norm. I'm a cool tone, with brown eyes and dark brown hair. Every time I wear any jewel tone colors, especially teal or pinks, I get tons of compliments. According to all these charts, I should be a warm tone (I've been professionally matched). So, I guess there's always exceptions.
