Pre-Owned Wedding Gowns

Friday, April 03, 2009

Thinking about getting married and want that designer dress but don’t want to pay the designer price tag? Well I discovered a couple websites that you can buy and sell those designer gowns!    You can find a slew of wedding dresses from designers like Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, to Jcrew. Prices can run from as low as $50 to about $5,000 so there’s a price for all budgets. What do you think, would you get a pre-owned wedding gown or sell yours?

I wouldn't sell mine, but I think a pre-owned dress is just fine. It was only worn once! Also, I was walking into Starbuck's yesterday with a recently-engaged friend. Next door there is a clearance/outlet store that sells somewhat high end stuff for cheap, as most of it is last season. They have J Crew wedding dresses, with tags still on them (mostly $1,950) for $175!! Can you believe that? Their most expensive J Crew dress was $450. So, I definitely say bargain shop!

i think that is a great idea! im not engaged yet, but when i plan my wedding down the road i will definitely consider buying a pre-owned gown. these days, its irresponsible to start your married life with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. a small wedding in a park with the reception in a friend's gorgeous yard would be a wonderful match to buying your dress pre-owned. low-cost weddings rock!

Yes, absolutely. It's not only about saving money in difficult times for something that will only be worn once, but also saving resources.

I actually borrowed a dress from my friend who had gotten married a few months earlier. Because my husband is in the Army, we decided to do two ceremonies - one with the JOP on the beach with our family and then one six months later in the church. For the second one, I bought a beautiful Melissa Sweet Spanish lace strapless. To be honest, I would have a difficult time parting ways with that lace dress. It was my dream dress, fit me like a charm and reminds me of one of the most special moments in my life. However, with that said, I do think it is important to remember that not everyone can afford to buy brand new gowns - especially by designers such as Vera, JCrew etc. We do it for prom dresses, so why not with wedding gowns.

Although a good money saver, I don't think I could ever have the heart to buy a pre-owned dress or sell my wedding dress because of its sentimental value. It would mean too much to me. But there's tons of people out there who would sell theirs and I have respect for that as well. They're just trying to make it easier for the next owner to have a wedding dress and create memories of their own in it while also making themselves a little cash.

I would definitely consider buying a used dress if it meant I could find a dress similiar to my dream dress. As far as selling my wedding gown...I think I would also consider selling it. I not only would get back some of the cost of buying it in the first place, but I wouldn't have to store it either...less space taken up in my closet!

I would definitely consider using a pre-owned wedding gown. I would look into either purchasing a pre-owned gown or even renting one. Bridal gowns are special, but for me the memories are not in the gown they are in my heart. I just cannot justify the great expense of buying a new designer gown and then cleaning it and properly storing it. It is a huge expense and a burden to have to protect and store it forever and for what? Is it likely I would have a daughter that would want to wear my dress that is so out of date and out of style? I would want her to choose her own style. If I had bought a gown I would definitely look into selling it, donating it, or even repurposing it into something else. Overall, these options just make more sense - especially financially and environmentally.

I didn't buy a used wedding dress when I got married a couple years ago but with the way that the economy is now, I probably would. I see nothing wrong with it, it's a huge money saver and the dress has probably only been worn once. I have seen great used dresses, and did consider getting one at the time. I decided that that was the one day that was all about me and my husband and I wanted to get the dress that I really wanted. I would not sell my dress unless we were having a really hard time financially. I am sentimental and that dress means a lot to me. Hopefully one day I will be able to fit back in it so I can renew my vows! =)

Maybe not a pre-owned wedding gown just because it's supposed to be such a momentous day. But I'd definitely get thrifty for cocktail events or other people's weddings. The Goodwill near my apartment is chock full of awesome goodies, just because people buy really nice high end things here on Newbury St and donate them eventually to the Goodwill.

I think a really special idea is using a part of a preowned gown. For instance, my mom still has her wedding dress. I would love to eitehr update that dress or use a part of her dress for my wedding day. I think pre owned dresses really help a budget but need to made special for the bride, so she feels unique on the big day

Used wedding dresses are such a great money saving idea! Why pay hundred and thousands of dollars for something you will wear once and put in the closet. The only downsize would be alterations. Many people have the dress altered to fit them exactly but if you found one that fit you would have a bargain!

A great place to also find bridal dresses cheap, is during David Bridal's $99 sale. The dresses are absolutely gorgeous and you pay less than half for them. Also surprisingly try Craigslist. When I was helping my best friend find her dress we found wonderful deals there. Keep your local classifieds in mind too. You would be surprised what you find there. Happy shopping ladies.

I don't know. Buying secondhand sound like the perfect way to look like an absolute dream on your wedding day, without having BAD dreams sbout your dress's price tag afterwards. But geting married is such a special thing, I'd want everything to be special and personal, just for me, and wearing another person's wedding dress doesnt quite fit into that. I think biting the bullet on the front end and paying the big buck, then selling the dress to somewhat reimburse myself, is the plan that fits me best.

I wish that there were these sites way back when I got married (100 years ago LOL). I googled the gowns and the prices shown on the websites Achelle posted in her blog are very competitive. WOW! Makes me want to have a re-newal ceremony. If I were in the market to buy a wedding gown, I definately would shop oncewed and the others shown. We were very casual when we got married, so I don't have a gown that I have kept, but if I did, I think that I would "recycle" sell it. Why not? Everyone winds up benefiting in the end. :-)

I think the preowned wedding dress web site is such an awesome idea. When I got married I was stuck with carrying my dress from move to move and then storing it in my storage building for years. Then finally I ended up giving it away which broke my heart since I had spent so much money on and it was such a beautiful gown. If i ever do decide to get remarried one day I will know where to come to get that amazing gown without the outrages prices. Thank you to whoever came up with that idea. even tho it is to late for me i will pass on the word to my girlfriends!

I think it is a great idea and option especially with our current economy. I believe that many budget conscious bride-to-be's would jump at the chance to be able to wear a designer gown and feel like a princess on their special day. I personally can't imagine spending several thousands of dollars on a dress that I will only wear one time, even if it is for the biggest day of my life. For me, I would definitely recommend shopping the pre-owned gown sites to at least browse the dresses, because you never know, you may find the gown of your dreams!

But then When I got to thinking about it, I realized buying a used designer gown would honestly be okay. Most women wear wedding gowns once in their life, so why should it matter whether its used or not, as long as it looks amazing on you.

I think I would definitely try not to get a pre-owned one. I think memories and everything special is piled and goes unspoken in your own wedding dress, to wear someone else's wouldn't be my own. The wedding dress is something I would keep forever so I don't think I would sell mine either. Maybe to pass down through family generations, but to a complete stranger hhmmmmmm....I think I would keep my dress-it's apart of you and your husband.

I hesitate to try E-Bay as I don't like the whole online auction type scenario and the shipping involved. I was excited to see the three sites you mentioned in this blog and will most definitely look into these to see if I can indeed sell my gown! I wouldn't sell mine and I won't buy a pre-owned dress. Though, I still think that selling pre-owned dresses are fine. For a dance that we had in high school, we asked around the school for any teachers to donate any old dress that they owned for students to buy at a cheap price. Believe it or not, there were lots of nice and interesting dresses from the 70s-80s. Before the dance, the dresses were all sold out!

I think buying a wedding dress secondhand is perfectly fine! Sometimes, the dress of your dreams isn't available in your price range, so what's wrong with buying it secondhand? It's still YOUR dress on YOUR special day. You'll be able to keep it forever and cherish it because you got your dream dress and didn't settle for anything less :)

I think that the idea is good especially in a time of economic hardship. However, I think personally I would really have to be on a budget for me to get a used dress. I think girls tend to dream about their wedding since they are young and they have these standards in their mind about what kind of ring they want, what kind of dress, what kind of reception, etc. And I think for the most part a second hand dress isn't what they planned. That's definitely not to say it doesn't have its merits but from what i understand, it's not like you can try on the dress and decide you don't like it and return it and I think clothes are a rather personal thing because what fits for one person doesn't fit the same way for another.

I think I would buy a pre-owned wedding dress if it was in good condition and well taken care of. And I would sell mine, because it just gets left in the closet forever anyways. I would keep the vail and flowers as keepsakes but I would sell the dress.

I personally would never buy a used wedding dress. My wedding day is my special day and I want to feel special..I wouldn't feel as special knowing someone else used this exact same dress on their big day. I would however like the idea of selling my dress afterwards..although parting with it would be very unlikely :).

I would absolutely use one of those websites when I decide to tie the knot. Seeing my two older sisters and brother get married I know how rediculously expensive weddings can be. If the dresses are cleaned and in near-perfect condition then why not? I could never blow a thousand dollars on a dress that I will only wear once. That's wasteful. Besides men have been renting their Tuxes for years. If you can look and feel fabulous for much less then why not? ....... That's why I use E.L.F. :)

I dont think I will ever be able to part with my wedding gown but I have a friend who actually found her dream dress on a similar website for way way cheaper than it would have been brand new. I think when it comes to wedding dresses you just know what one is "destined" to be yours new or not!

I would get a preowned gown for the right price. If I could find the gown I really wanted for less I would buy it and get it dry cleaned. It would still be cheaper than paying retail.

I would TOTALLY buy a used wedding gown. Wedding dresses are so expensive now, why not buy a beautiful dress, have it cleaned, and all for less than what you would originally pay? Plus you're really only using the dress for that one day!

For me, I'm not big on keeping clothing around just for the sentimental value. A wedding dress will surely have some great memories attached, but why let a dress hang in your closet forever? I think it would be a nice thing to sell your dress once you're done, especially if it cost a lot! Instead of gathering dust for years, you allow another woman to wear it and create memories of her own. Pass the love around!

I think a pre-owned dress is a great idea. the idea of spending 5000$ on a dress you wear once, (maybe twice or three times these days) is outrageous. I will definately be buying used or on the cheap!

Honestly with today's economy I believe that this is a great idea, to re-sell used gowns. There are some people who want to keep their gowns for sentimental reasons, but honestly, when are you ever going to wear it again, and twenty, thirty years down the line, is your imaginary daughter really going to want to wear a dress that is out-dated? I would definitely look into purchasing a wedding dress from one of the above sites, especially if it happens to be my dream wedding dress for a fraction of the cost!!

My best friend is getting married this Summer and we have discussed the idea of her buying a used dress. It seems odd to me because your wedding dress is your special momento from the big day, you are supposed to keep it for your whole life and pass it down to future generations. I don't know why someone would sell it or give it away in the first place but I certainly wouldn't. On the other hand, it is cost efficient and for my friend (who's on an especially tight budget) it may be the only way to get the dress of her *dreams*!

I would not sell my wedding dress. Though I know I will never wear it again, being able to look at it and remember my wedding is fun. Maybe my daughter will want to wear it one day. The dress I bought was a floor model that would not be carried next year. I only paid $200, plus $75 in alterations, and I had the perfect dress that fit me perfectly. Also, I would never buy a wedding dress online. There is something about trying them on, touching the fabric, seeing the color against your skin that makes buying it in a store really important. That being said, I bought my wedding dress at a store over 2 hours from home - so may need to search a while!

I personally would buy a used wedding dress ONLY and only if it was a designer gown because usually a person who spends big money on this type of gown would more than likely take good care of it. Besides you could always have it steamed or professionally dry cleaned if you really are afraid of germs. I think its sweet that people have even considered doing this. Overall if I saw my dream dress on one of these websites I would totally buy one "Hello Lover" hehe

When I got married, I looked on eBay for wedding dresses because I couldn't find anything in town that was like the picture I had in my head... very simple, long, draped in the back. The places in town (Austin, TX) that weren't high-end, super expensive boutiques only had those weird giant pouffy dresses. So I looked on eBay and saw a Nicole Miller dress that caught my eye. I was on vacation at the time and by the time I got home and checked on it again, the auction was over. So on a whim, I emailed the winning bidder and offered to buy it from her after her wedding was over! (A twice used wedding dress!:) As it turned out, she had received the dress, it didn't fit her, and she was willing to sell it to me for slightly more than she bought it for. It arrived and after a few minor adjustments, it fit! The whole experience was a lot easier and cheaper and less taxing than traipsing all over town all trying on a bunch of ugly dresses that I couldn't afford! I'm not sure how much Nicole Miller wedding dresses cost new, but I only paid $80 for my dress... I think that's pretty good!

I'm not sure about a 2nd-hand wedding gown. Instead, I bought mine in a outlet which was on a removal sale. End up it costed me only $128 for 3 dresses, 2 wedding gowns and 1 party dress. They are so adorable and just got some much accompliment. They are Jessica McClintock and each of them costs hundreds. Anyway, I still hang on with my 3 dresses, maybe leave them to my daughter when she grows up.

As the saying goes you must have something blue, something borrwed, and something new. Well, why can't that be wedding dresses- if its still good why must we insist on wasting our money when we could simply recycle and save.

I am not really impressed by designer tags on things, but am always looking for a deal. My wedding dress was only about $350 including all the alterations, and if I found THE dress and it was an expensive designer, I would be much happier accepting a second-use dress than paying full price. Plus, it's way more "green" reuse! As far as selling my own--never really thought about it until now, but perhaps I would be willing. Not sure if my mom would be!

I say that these websites that offer wedding gown re-sale is brilliant! The concept is so enticing because it offers a choice - if it doesn't work out with your ex-spouse, and the memories are so painful, then you should try to get your investment back, or atleast a portion of it. I know some brides might think it a bad omen, but think of it this way. Not every dress there has been sold to the company because of memories of a painful divorce. Some might have been sold because of financial reasons - in this economy, everyone is trying to save a buck. Technically, it's a great idea because it's a win-win situation. The previous owner gets some money for the dress and the buyer gets a discounted price for a beautiful dress!

I too wanted the most beautiful dress when I married...and was fortunate to find a clearance that was exactly what I was looking for! Now during tougher economic times and taking into consideration resources, perhaps I would rethink a gently-used gown....especially since there are so many wonderful outlets now. The other thing that I think of when I read posts on this subject is how much preparation and emotional investment goes into the ceremony, the dress, the event....and it is not really about the event, it is about the marriage. I had the wedding of my dreams, absolutely everything I wanted. In hindsight I wish I had spent at least 50% of that investment in my marriage, preparing for everything needed to sustain a lifelong commitment. Sorry, girls, to sound like a downer....but really, really think about the marriage at least as much, and even more, than the ceremony and the dress. You all deserve a lifetime of happiness, not just wedding day bliss!!

It's funny that this question was asked. I went wedding dress shopping with a friend the other day at a shop and she found an amazing "used" dress. I would definitely buy a dress from a used or discounted shop because it's just one day that begins the rest of your life and that means you should look nice without going broke. Saving money is definitely a concern for me :-) so I would get a discounted/used dress!

With the economy the way it is, and the cost of weddings now, heck yes I would buy a used dress, and sell my dress after the honeymoon! What are you going to do with it after the wedding? Put it in a box and put it up in the attic? Save it for your daughter/cousin/neice? Not me! My daughters wouldnt have worn my dress if I had kept it (I sold it after the divorce!). It just makes better sense now days to get something back out of it.

I bought my wedding dress as a preowned one. The reality is that neither the wedding nor the dress makes the marriage and for me it was unrealistic to spend so much on a new dress just for the sake of it being new. I loved my dress and I saved alot buying it pre-owned. It still cost $399 but it was well worth it.

Your special day will still be special whether you buy a brand new gown or a resale gown. Many women cannot afford the gowns they see in all the magazines. To own a Vera Wang or Monique Lhuillier gown is often only a dream. To be afforded this opportunity is tremendous and will only make the brides day that much more special. I see nothing wrong with purchasing a pre-owned dress. I would even consider selling mine. To afford someone else the same happiness I had in wearing my gown is a gift.
