Prom Dresses!

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Hi Ladies!!! Prom season is upon us, and the hunt for the perfect dress has begun. With budgets for these pricy threads tight I have found a few savvy ways to find your dress for less!
-Borrow a dress from a friend; a friend from another school is ideal as nobody will recognize the dress.
-Check craigslist.com for girls in your area that are selling dresses or sell yours for some extra cash!
-Look at websites like donatemydress.org for a variety of dresses that have been donated for free
-Try stores like Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom’s Rack and other discount stores for designer dresses that have been marked down significantly.
-Hunt through resale stores like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads for bargain deals on gently used dresses.
Good Luck and have a safe and fun Prom!!!
And for every valid web comment on this blog only we will give you a Free $5 e.l.f. coupon via email just to say thanks (1 per person, to the first 100 posts only).

These are some great ideas. I also say if you have the skill don't be afraid to go old school and make it yourself. You get to wear an original design. Your own.

go to the GoodWill believe it or not they have quite a selection or you can get a dress have it altered and make it your own for a fraction of the price!

Upscale consignment shops can be a great place to look, also. You can really find some beautiful dresses at great prices there. Another idea that can work (at my college) is to organize a dress swap, where everyone brings in their dresses and trades for one to borrow for the dance. It really seems to work well, especially if a lot of people participate!

I'm not in high school anymore, but what I did for my prom is head out with my mom to bridal shops, outlets, department stores and even "high" end stores. I think that where ever you head, there will always be a sale somewhere. I ended up getting a column BCBG dress for about $200.00. If that still isn't within your budget, my friend found an awesome floor length gown at Macy's for about $100. I know it is too late now, but all these dress stores have sales in March, so if you are planning to go to prom next year, then I suggest you look early!

Last year I went to my prom and had a hard time finding a dress. I decided to go for a plane black dress and lots of gold bangles and a nice gold chain with black and gold shoes. My entire look cost $100 and I was one of the best dressed at my high school prom!! =D

These are good tips! Some other ones: try setting up a "closet exchange" for dresses with your friends, or sisters of your friends. Check out bridal shops, bridesmaid dresses can be perfect for prom. Sites like Chadwicks.com have a surprising prom dress section - you might find something there, too!

If you are able to find the "perfect" dress, you can always have it re-tailored or accessoried differently to get another season's use out of it! My daughter wore a dress identical to Marilyn Monroe's famous white halter dress for her junior prom, and the following yearshe had the skirt shortened and a sash added for a new and unique look. The dress cost $400, so it was definitely worth the effort to get another use out of it!

I'm actually looking for a dress for my Junior Prom, which means that it has to be just the right amount formal and classy, but also informal because it's not quite senior prom... in other words, a real hassle to shop for! Buffalo Exchange is a great store. I've been in NY, and they have amazing prices on their new jeans. If you're already thrifting (and in the NY area), go to Beacon's Closet for some cute vintage :)

Oh these links are very helpful. When I was in high school, I actually came across websites about donated prom dresses. I think it was called the Princess Project. I went and came home with two dresses. The sizes aren't always the perfect fit, but they were free and it was better than spending a hundred dollars on a dress I would probably wear for only one night.

Although I eventually found my dress at Macy's, I also looked up some local vintage stores to try to find a dress since this is 'in' right now. Some of them were really cute! However, vintage clothing is really difficult to fit and I never found anything that fit perfectly. I've also noticed that if you go to department stores earlier in the season or immediately following prom season, the dresses are cheaper.

Try shopping at thrift stores and goodwill stores in upscale neighborhoods. A lot of wealthy people donate dresses. Watch for specials at brand name department stores or you can even try E-Bay to find a good steal! My fashion advice, is to not get too creative. You want to be unique, but also remember that you are paying a large sum of money for this special night!

These links are DEFINITELY helpful! You could also try places like platos closet, which is gently used or new clothes. I like looking at DEB's dresses (clothing store) because they're usually cheap and also on sale. If you insist on having a dress from a magazine picture, find out who makes it and do some internet research. A lot of times you can find some legit sites that will be selling the dress for A LOT cheaper. But my advice on buying online is to research the site you plan on buying from and definitely check out their shipping and return policy. You don't want to get stuck with a ruined or wrong dress the day before your prom!

So by then all the stores that had prom dresses were now putting them on sale since the prom season was practically over. So thats how i got a BARGAIN on my dress. It was the perfect dress for like i believe 25 dollars? It was great on sale and didnt hurt my wallet! I got compliments on it all day and they couldnt believe i got it for so cheap!!!

Consignment stores can be great for vintage or sometimes even couture. I once found a Comme Des Garcons gown for under $100 - was hard to resist. But the important thing is not the material things like a dress but the unforgettable times shared with friends.

I bought my prom dress at a local vintage clothing boutique. I paid $10 for it! It was a simple satin dress. A friend helped me add a sash and some beads. Total cost was under $30 when we finished. I think it's ridiculous to spend $100's on a dress that may be worn only once, and besides which I was complimented all night!

If you can tailor your own clothing, you can pretty much make any of these options look great. If not, don't forget to stack coupons and sales at the bigger stores. Friends and family discounts are showing up more and more as are bigger sales and clearances.

I just bought a prom dress and there are a TON of deals out there! all you have to do is be willing to search. the last two years now i've bought my prom dresses online off of ebay. I make sure to look at the sellers past and see that they always had good reviews and look up what that same dress would be out of a boutique. But before buying anything make sure you try on prom dresses at a boutique or what not just to know your size. This year I bought a beautiful brand new Alyce Designs dress for $150 just because it was overstock. The original price of this dress was $430! The extra time I spent researching dresses was no waste. I saved almost $300.

Thanks for these advices. I still remember my prom night which is about six years ago!!! I got my dress from a store at at the mall, for about a hundred dollars!! Which I could have bought it somewhere else for a lot cheaper!

My girls are grown and married now, but when prom time came around we had to shop conservatively. One of the prettiest prom dresses ever for my youngest daughter was purchased @ JC Penny's! It was a coral color, halter style with sequins & was beautiful! The great part - it was less than $100.00 which meant new shoes & purse also!

I love Macy's for dress shopping too, or Petite Sophisticates in any outlet mall. Especially on sale, you can get beautiful pieces for bargain prices.

These are great ideas. Our local high school always has a Prom Dress sale about a month before prom. I've donated a few of my old prom dresses to this cause.

My cousin is going to prom this year and I took her dress shopping a couple times. We spent hours at the mall and she wouldn't even try anything on, she's very picky. We only found one that she would agree to try on and she liked it and it looked really good on her, but she wasn't totally sure it this was "the dress" so she didn't buy it. We went back to the mall a few weeks later and we found that the dress she had tried on was marked down to $70, so she bought it. Sometimes its worth it to go to the same stores a few times to see what has gone sale and also to see if any new dresses have come in.
