It's A Recession - Is Your Lipstick On?

Saturday, June 06, 2009

Aliza Freud, a talented and visionary marketer, is the recent Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SheSpeaks, Inc. (www.shespeaks.com). SheSpeaks, Inc. is the leading women’s insights and on-line, word-of-mouth marketing network with over 100,000 members across the U.S. whose immediate reach totals over 12,000,000 womenAliza founded SheSpeaks based on the principle that women would thrive in a dedicated online community where they could gather, connect with others and see the power of their voices in action. The company has successfully tested products and services for such leading brands including Philips, Dove® Chocolates, Heinz, Food Network, Oxygen Network, AOL, Martha Stewart, Ghirardelli, L’oreal, OPI Cosmetics and others.

The economy might be ugly, but single women across the country are
amping up their beauty routines.Turns out, you would rather give up
gold and diamonds than eye shadow and gloss, according to SheSpeaks’
recent Recession Shopping Survey. <http://www.shespeaks.com/recessionshopping> It just might be true that the more
things change, the more they stay the same. During past
recessions—from The Great Depression to the economic downturn in the
1980’s, sales of movies, condoms and lipstick rose, along with
nightlife entertainment.

Perhaps it’s in the worst of times that we find the best in ourselves?
Maybe by raising our spirits and looking and feeling good, we gain the

momentum as a culture to turn the economy around. Okay, maybe not, but
there is certainly something to be said about the fact that women
refuse to give up their waterproof mascara when people are crying
about the economy.

Have you made any cutbacks recently? What are you most willing to live without?

Unfortunately as a private college student, I have definately had to make cutbacks. Not to mention, work even more hours, so that finding time for shopping is virtually impossible. Of course I cut back on buying clothes before on cutting back on make up. I have a huge desk at work that I can hide in so people really can only see my face, hence why i decided it is okay to repeat outfits more at work haha. I have however given in to buying more makeup from convencience stores like Target and going with Maybelline or Covergirl rather than shopping at Ulta and Sephora. Hopefully in a couple years after I graduate and get a job, not only will i be making money but the economy also will, so we can stop compromising!

sheer mineral I havent been able to buy it so I have bought other derp store types. Nothing works like the sheer mineralmakeup, I use it after the mineral foundation and mineral powder. I have the more expensive brand andit doesnt do the great outcome I get from ELF>COM

Amazingly, I haven't had to make many cutbacks. To tell you the truth, my family has kind of always had money issues. The only thing I really have issues with is finding a job so I can shop some more E.L.F. :)

I cook more at home and have been looking online for sales, coupons etc. that would help reduce the costs of my purchases. I love make-up, and it is a good thing I got introduced to e.l.f. products because I can still afford to look good. Looking good certainly help lift the spirits.

I've had to cut back on traveling to shop! I know...doesn't sound like much, but I live an hour away from ANY mall. Even an hour away from Walgreen and places like that. And I'm a tad bit addicted to makeup. When I found ELF it was awesome! Great amazing prices and great makeup! I can most def get more bang for my buck! Literally! Thanks so much!

I'd give up all my jewelry. Instead of my mascara and lip gloss. I can't live without either one.

On a similar note, I have noticed that a lot of designers are using bright colors this season. I guess they are trying to uplift our spirits in a recession. I was watching a fashion show on television, and the stylists said that the bright colors are a refreshing alternative to black, in a time when people need to say optimistic and happy. I am trying to wear bright colors, and I too wear make-up and style my hair nice, all to make myself feel better. Sometimes it's the little things that can make the biggest difference. I know that putting on lip gloss always makes me feel happy :)
