Quirky Baby Names

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Clockwise from top left: Violet Affleck, Shiloh Jolie Pitt, Dannielynn (Anna Nicole Smith's child), and Suri Cruise

Over the past few years you might have noticed a celebrity affinity for unusual baby names. Prime examples include Shiloh (Brangelina), Suri (TomKat), Apple (Chris and Gwyneth), and Bronx Mowgli (Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz ).
And every time one of these names is announced, some of you (and sometimes me) have a laugh at the expense of the parents, reasoning that the kids will one day grow to resent their ridiculous names (see Pilot Inspektor for Jason Lee's child) or be forced to join the circus. However, what most of you (and sometimes me) don't realize is that it appears as though they're not the only ones reconsidering the conventional "Michael" or "Jennifer".
In fact, you might be surprised what names made the top 25 most popular baby names list this year: Addison, Ava, and Riley for girls, and Jayden, Logan, and Caleb for boys. So, what's going on? Are we slowly dropping middle of the road conservative names for more unique ones? What are you considering naming your little one to be?

I'm definitely leaning towards Lucy or Luca or Rowan for a girl. For guys, I like Sage, Payton, or Gabriel. I like eccentric names or naming people after trees or stars.

I think that different names are very creative. A boring name won't stick in your head as long and it is really grabs peoples attention. Actually I wish I had a less generic name, but you don't want to embarrass the kid when they are older such as Jack Asstin or Harry Pitts.

I have an unusual name and hated it growing up. I think I would choose somewhat common names for my children. I am considering the names Stella or Aubrey.

My friends have named their kids with the same sort of quirky names. In fact, even in Japan, I know a celebrity that named her daughter Ichigo (which means strawberry). I guess it IS becoming more popular than the plain Jane / John names haha! I'm naming my daughter Leona Haruka and son Nikolai Kazuya.

I think creative, different names are cool, but don't make it so unusual that your kid will be made fun of growing up. We are expecting a boy this summer & naming him Lee...we have such a long name so we wanted it short (named after my hubby's dad).

My Husband and I named our son Ryan for two reasons. The first is that we wanted him to have a not so common name but something that wasn't ridiculous or hard to spell. I wanted people to hear him say his name and be able to think: "R-Y-A-N" Second, my husband's name is Randy and we wanted him to be simmilar to his daddy, but not a junior. They do have the same initials though, so the pocket watch I engraved for Randy last Christmas will eventually be a keepsake for our son.

My name is Parise which is a rare name and no one seems to know how to pronounce it, so when i have children i'm going to give them names that are easy to pronouce and spell

My sons names are Mason and Carter. i am one that just could never see myself naming my kids "normal" names. in fact I often have a little laugh to myself when I do hear 'normal' named kids.

For boys, a classic name is not going to be teased. I like William or Jonathan. Girls have more leeway. An eccentric name can sound pretty and alluring. Classics are always...classic, yet...
