Beautiful Everyday - by Anna Sabino

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Working from home on days with no meetings scheduled, I can admit I often used to be tempted to wear sweats and no make-up. This was paired with my comfortable flats when I was making occasional Starbucks/lunch runs. I remember one day I was in the neighborhood and stopped by my friend Kelley's place. When I came in, she had just gotten home from work. She had a brand new pair of tight jeans on and a pretty top. She was finishing vacuuming. When I asked her if she didn't have the time to change she asked me "Into what? Something comfortable, like sweats?  I decided to get rid off my sweats, they don't look flattering" - she said. That little episode happened a long time ago but it definitely influenced me.

It's not that I got rid off my sweats but I definitely make sure I buy clothes that are comfortable and look good to wear everyday.  Even if I work from home with no meetings scheduled. I also changed and wear make-up everyday. It's never heavy but a very natural, everyday look.  I don't do it for the people who see me grabbing lunch, I do it for myself. I like wearing it, I made applying makeup a part of my daily routine.

Then I stumbled upon this quote by Cindy Crawford, who said:  "Wear make-up everyday, always, you never know when you're going to meet him."   Yes, that's another reason...

I know exactly what she means. I stayed home with my kids for a year and eventually stopped caring about hair, makeup or what I was wearing. After battling through a pretty deep depression I realized I needed to stop looking at those women who always dressed nicely and looked better than me and being jealous. I needed to pull myself together. I bought all new makeup (ELF helped here!!) and got out my good clothes. Now I wear makeup every day, even if only my kids will see it. It makes me feel good, like I am one of those women who always looks pulled together and beautiful.

I can complete relate to this story especially since I work from home about once or twice a week. I try to look decent during my regular business hours whether I am going out or not. Often when my husband gets home, he'll ask why I am wearing makeup since I worked from home. I tell him I want to look my best whenever I can. Plus knowing that I look nice gives me that extra boost of energy I need sometimes to get things done. Thanks Elf for this blog, nice to know I am not crazy when where makeup and do not go out amongst the public. :)

I think that is great advice! I find when I "dress up" - even for a "normal day" - I feel so much better! :)

I definitely can relate to this story. I would put all my energy into my home and family and forgot about myself. My son looks nice and that was my main concern. I forgot what it was like to take care of myself.

I like the quote by Cindy Crawford. It is so true - You never know when you're going to meet a guy. I know that for me, it seems like its ALWAYS the day I don't do much that I meet a cute guy. And the advice about dressing nice everyday is great. I feel better and am happier when I feel nice.

I agree with Anna here to a point, but I do love wearing sweats and no makeup! Even celebrities are caught without makeup sometimes, why should we have to dress up to go to the grocery store?

I wear makeup everyday, even if i'm staying at home i do a natural look :concealer, mascara and elf plumping lip glaze in plum pout (it's very moisturizing).I do it because it makes me feel good about myself and because i love makeup :)

Sometimes it is so tempting to just bum around in comfortable clothes and no makeup, but looking too laid back made me feel and act too laid back too. So even during school I would never wear sweats (only to bed), and I learned how to put on more natural looking makeup. Looking nice just for yourself just makes you feel better. I even wear some makeup when I go jogging outside in the humidity b/c it's become a habit now.

I totally agree! I always feel like I accomplish a lot more in a day if I'm dressed up nice and wearing makeup. I feel so much better about myself if I look good, plus you never know who you will run into!

Well, this certainly is a reminder that I too, unfortunately fallen into an unfashionable rut characterized by minimal/no makeup and sweats. Maybe I will just take Ms. Crawford's advice...

I half agree. I think that wearing sweats at home isn't awful but a good thing to do is buy cuter sweats. There are plenty of pairs of sweatpants that have some fit to them and style that are just as comfortable as your oversized mens sweats and make you look and feel better! I don't think ANY woman should feel OBLIGATED to wear makeup but it does tend to make me feel better. When I'm at home because I'm sick and I feel up to it I'll take a shower, put on clean (cute) sweats and a little bit of makeup and I physically feel better. Ultimately, I think that all girls should be comfortable enough with themselves to not have to wear makeup all the time or cute clothes but also love themselves enough to put on a little makeup and something cute so they feel good!

This is truly wonderful advice and I couldn't agree more. I always find that when I dress up and feel beautiful then it shows throughout my whole body and I truly become beautiful! So as they say, look good, feel good!

What?? No sweats?! I love sweats! But her story has got me thinking that maybe I should get rid of a few of the older pairs. And I like wearing makeup on the weekends b/c I find that that is when I wear it just for myself.

It's nice to be in the habit of putting on your makeup in the morning because it leaves you free for any spontaneous opportunities that may come up during the day. For example, a friend might call and say they have tickets for a show and would like to take you if you can be ready in 10 minutes. If you need to first go and apply your makeup you will probably not be ready in time.

I like that Anna creates jewellery that's unique. Her style is very imaginative. I like the girl on the swing necklace. How cute is that! That would be a nice gift for a young lady. I also like the rose ring; it's quite fun.

I know exactly the feeling, it is often much more comfortable for me to not have makeup on when at home just relaxing. I do make myself a few times a week put my makeup on and some nice clothes. It does make you feel so much better.

I think the best part about this is where you do it for yourself, because it makes yourself feel good. i think thats what gives girls the most confidence; when they do things for themselves and enjoy doing it.

I wear make-up for myself .. why? It's because I want to feel beautiful and clean, and it gives me that extra boost of confidence. :) Even when I'm at home and I don't go out, I put on a little eyeliner and concealer .. I like that "clean" feeling.

oops, comment under wrong article. born in '47, haven't worn makeup for 40 years till i try my elf once in a while. hubby thinks i'm weird when i do. i am totally comfortable in sweats, bermudas and tees. i will put on my old work clothes to go out. not a fashionista. my sister in law about same age is the direct opposite - fashionable and perfect makeup, she cares, i don't.

when i first went to university, my fashion style went downhill as i had trouble dealing with all the time i put into school. not only me, but all the students in the dorms wore sweats. some even wore pyjamas to lectures. i knew it wasn't how i wanted to look but i couldnt find time to doll myself up. now that i'm in my final year of university with a team leader job, i have learned to incorporate chic into comfortable. it's much better to dress nice because people look up to you and you want to look and feel confident.
