Duochrome Eyeshadows - Looks and Layering

Thursday, July 09, 2009

Duochrome eye shadows are gorgeous applied normally- over your bare eyelid. But if you'd really like the nuances of color, apply the duochrome or iridescent shadow over a black base. A perfect base is the darkest color (a slightly shimmery black) in e.l.f.'s Black Licorice cream  shadow duo ($1). elf cosmetics cream eye shadow duo in Black Licorice Using your finger or a taklon brush, apply Black Licorice to where ever you plan to accent the duo chrome shadow. A great way to do this is to leave the inner half of your upper lid bare and apply the black cream shadow to the outer half of your lid. In these makeup looks, you can see the differences and depth that a dark base adds to a duochrome eye shadow. All of my photos use Black Licorice on the outer half topped with eye shadow, and plain shadow on the inner half. For the rest of my eye makeup, I'm using elf's Tone Correcting Concealer in Light under eyes and inner corners; and elf Studio Lengthening and Volumizing mascara in Black. For an extra bonus... the Black Licorice cream base acts as a primer and grips your shadows to greatly increase wear! L'Oreal HIP loose pigment shadow in Intrepid Intrepid ($12) is like the chocolate mint of eyeshadows. It's a medium brown glitter shadow with flashes of bright green. Absolutely gorgeous in low and high light! L'Oreal HIP loose pigment shadow in Intrepid Purely Cosmetics Soft Moon loose mineral eyeshadow Soft Moon shadow is actually a neutral steel gray when applied with a light hand. But when layered over top Black Licorice, accents of turquoise and sparks blue pop out of the charcoal gray base. This shadow ($6.50) looks amazing on any eye color!  Purely Cosmetics Soft Moon loose mineral eyeshadow Spell Cosmetics Aurora eye shadow Aurora ($8) applies to your bare lid as a medium pink with slight shimmer- when applied over Black Licorice brilliant highlights of blue and purple become visible. Spell Cosmetics Aurora eye shadow So basically by just adding a Black Licorice under your iridescent or duochrome eyeshadows, you can double up your shadow wardrobe! Do any gals out there wear duochromes? What are your absolute favorite eye shadow colors?

I'm not a big fan of this look because I don't like the way it's divided on a straight line right down the center of the lid.

I liked the second eye photo because it doesn't fully cover the eye and that's how I like doing my eyes. If the primer sticks on really well, I should probably buy that soon! And I didn't think black base sounded helpful but it actually does, haha. and also, if you put white eyeliner on the waterline on the bottom lid, it will make your eyes pop out more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE using cream eyeshadows as a base on my eyelids because it does give two different shades using the same color over the base. It also makes the colors pop! Especially if you use a natural color as a base it makes colors brighter. Using a darker color base gives the shadow more depth which is awesome when you're going for a smokey, mysterious, and sexy eye! :) Great tips ELF!

My favourite duochromes eyeshadow are Butter Pecan and the Olive cream eyeshadow combination from e.l.f's $1.00 line. Firstly, I would apply an eye primer either e.l.f. Studio Primer or Lise Watier (Canadian brand)all over my lids, let it set, then apply which colour I'm feeling that day, then apply my Annabelle (Canadian brand as well) matching colour in a powder eyeshadow. Does the colour really pop at that point? Yes! And its on ALL DAY with a few minor touchups.:) Sometimes, I would add an off-white eyeshadow either from Covergirl or Wet n' Wild under the brow and blend to brighten the eyes.

WOOWW great tips with the cream eyeshadows! I really can't believe the difference the Black licorice cream makes to other eyeshadow colours. It literally adds 4x the colour atleast! I am sooo purchasing the black licorice. I have only one of the new ones, Sugar Cookie to test it out. Love them. It's an amazing base, and I am going to order wayy more colours to match for different accents! Thank you SOO much for putting this up, now I can see really how much dramatic change this creates!

I don't like the look here. It might look better if the colors were more similar and it was more blended but a straight line down the middle - nah... I still love the dual eye shadows, I just wear it with one color on lid, one in the crease line.

This is the first duo shadow that I will be using. I usually wear blacks, silvers, grays, purples, pinks and greens on my eyes. I love the fact that layering this cream shadow under a black would be awesome and create an even better staying power for the shadow. :)

Hi All, I think there's some confusion as to my tutorial. The BASE eyeshadow for ALL the looks photographed is Black Licorice by e.l.f. Overtop I have applied various DuoChrome eyeshadows (which are eyeshadows that contain a base color in their powder and a shimmer color of a *totally* different color that only appears in certain light). The DuoChrome eyeshadows are COLORS, not duos of 2 eyeshadows in a pan. I really hope this helps explain things. :) Cheers, Jami www.bionic-beauty.com

Also another quick clarification- I did not blend the line in the middle of my eyelid since this is there to show the difference how the exact same duochrome eye shadow looks over Black Licorice (in the outer corner) and over bare skin (in the inner corner). I really hope this helps explain things. Feel free to question back and I'll try to answer (or email me through the contact form on my blog with your Q's.). THANKS! Jami, aka Bionic Beauty

I really like the hue of Aurora. I have similar colors from other cosmetic lines that look highly pigmented, but once you put them on, they are not really that bright. I will try this out, and hopefully it will look as nice as the photo featured here.

I love the elf duo eye shadow cream! My favourite is "blueberry." The colours are so versatile and compliment many eye shadows. And it comes in two colours - one light and one dark, so I could do both smokey looks or barely-there looks. It's super creamy and easy to apply, and best of all it doesn't crease (just don't use too much!) You can also wear it on its own. Overall, LOVE!

I'm a subscriber to Bionic Beauty and have to say it is one of the best beauty blogs I read! I understand exactly what Jami means in this tutorial and think the idea of layering the duochromes over the Licorice is terrific. E.L.F. cosmetics always amaze me with their quality and innovation, especially when you consider how over-priced most cosmetic lines really are. Great value!

you know its funny that i just came across this blog post because I've had that black licorice cream eye shadow duo for quite sometime and its been neglected at the bottom of my train case ever since I got it. I didnt really like the texture much but then within the last week or so its all I've been using as a base for my Mac Vex & Humid eyeshadows. It flashes their duochromes so beautifully. I find the licorice duo to be the perfect consistency, and amazingly creaseless throughout the day. I'm actually about to order about 3 or 4 more backups and maybe a few other colors just to experiment with. Highly ,highly recommend!
