Staycation As A Lifestyle - Katja Presnal

Monday, July 13, 2009

Long before I even knew what the term staycation meant, I was already living the permanent staycation lifestyle. Even if it was just stopping and enjoying the perfect cup of latte in a local coffee shop.

I have lived in three countries and seven states in the United States, and traveled quite a bit. You will most likely not see me in the tourist bus doing a seven-day-tour of Central Europe, nor standing in the line at Six Flags. But I can discuss about the Lufthansa flights between the United States and Germany and I've spent enough time at NYC and Chicago airports to guide you to the closest Starbucks, and I am as comfortable riding a horse into the Texan sunset as admiring Kandinsky's work in a modern art museum.

I haven't always been a world traveler. In fact I was born in a small town of Southern Finland, and while we did several family trips to Central Europe when I was growing up, most of the childhood summers I spent on a boat, enjoying the sea, eating freshly caught salmon and falling asleep in the cabin of the boat, water rocking it and sun shining though the boat windows during the nightless Northern summer nights. Maybe it was all those lazy summers that left me with the love of the sea, but also the desire to sail around the world to see more.

It wasn't until I was 22 years old that I moved out of Finland, and decided to spend a year in Germany. That was 12 years ago, and the year actually ended up being only a few months in Germany, but got me started with permanent staycation lifestyle of moving around the world. I met the love of my life, who is now my husband, and who shares my passion for adventure. We have our own United Nations now - our three children, who were born in different countries as World Citizens.

Three years ago my fourth "child" was born, my company Skimbaco. For the lack of the word to describe our permanent staycation lifestyle of moving around and enjoying the surroundings where we were and living life to the fullest, I made up a word SKIMBACO from Finnish slang word for skiing and from the short for Colorado, since at that moment the staycation for us meant skiing in Colorado. Today? It's museum hopping & shopping in New York - next it probably be wine tasting in France. Skimbaco simply describes the carpe diem-attitude I have for life - to live in the moment and to live life to the fullest.

People often ask me what has been my favorite place to live or visit so far, and each time I either have a different answer depending what mood I am, or I just answer "there is no best place" or "I haven't been there yet". That simply means that since I equally love the wine valleys of the Rhein river in Germany, sailing in the archipelago of Turku in Finland, skiing at the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and there is not quite other place to smell the apples on the fall time than upstate New York, there really is something great about every single place I have visited or lived in. And that, if something, is the beauty of permanent staycation for me - finding those "great things" around you, enjoying every day of your life.

This summer, take a day off your busy schedule and live Skimbaco way. Find a new local restaurant you have never eaten in, go and play mini-golf just for fun, visit the museum you drive by every day but have never visited, or go outside and jump in the water puddles when it's pouring rain. Or just color your nails with a crazy new color. Do something that you thought you wouldn't do in million years, and forget about the reason why you thought you wouldn't do it and just have fun. I would love to hear how you live life to the fullest and the Skimbaco lifestyle! Me? I just bought a pair of pink Barbie roller skates for me, because... well, why not?

And for every valid web comment on this blog only we will give you a Free $5 e.l.f. coupon via email just to say thanks (1 per person, to the first 100 posts only).

I like the staycation. It is something I have been doing for a few years now and it has given me a totally new look and appreciation of life and the adventures that lay right around the corner. I like checking out the local tourista stuff and looking for the public art around town getting out of the car and enjoying them. My next goal in life is to find something that will allow me the freedom to live and travel around the world.

I love the staycation idea! My husband can't take time off work and we have a little one now, so we're definitely going to try and explore the fun things around us!

Although I would love to travel the world, living in a new country for a couple years, I also love the idea of staycation. Whether you live in a small town or a city, there is always something new to do or see or just experience in a different way. My friends and I either want to just stay within a ten mile radius from our homes or travel far away, so we definitely like staycation. We had just recently gone bowling, which was not new to us but we still had a lot of fun.

LOVE this story! I always try to hunt down local places that are virtually unknown and turn them into my new faves! Lots of 'hole in the wall' coffee shops and eaterys to explore...

I know exactly what you mean with the whole staycation deal. I have live in 13 different homes since I was born (and I'm only 22)so I always try to enjoy life to the fullest! I'm actually planning a trip to go back home to Pakistan for my cousin's wedding, and I think I'm gonna stop by in the neighboring countries (Dubai and India). It should be an amazing trip!

I've always felt like I was stuck in a bubble for my entire life. My life is a cycle of routine that compose of waking up going to school going home doing homework watching television the occasional hanging out with friends and sleeping. And when the clock strikes 6am the routine starts all over again. But when I ventured into college this last year, my life changed. I was exposed to a whole new world and though I am complete homesick I love it. I love going out to new restraunts and trying new food (especially ethnic food). I love embracing my body (which i never did before) by going to the gym everyday and wearing that shorter shorts or that tighter shirt. One day I wish to travel the world and open my eyes and finally i'll be able to find the needle that will enable me to pop the bubble that I live in.

I enjoy staycations, especially this summer. With the economy so poor, staycations allows you to enjoy life with little money in your pocket.

Wow! What a life! I want to travel the whole world! I love traveling, and I cant wait to see places that I can only dream of. You've done almost everything in you're life. You travelled the world, had a great job, and now live in NYC and have a family. That is exactly how I want my life to go. Nice!

I like her style. Simplicity is what I strive for on a daily basis. It is difficult sometimes when the world we live in is go, go, go but that's where I'm changing MY lifestyle from fast to slowing it right down and Katja's Skimbaco Home clearly represents that way of living.:)

I know exactly what you mean by living the Staycation lifestyle. I work as a teacher in the states about 9 1/2 months out of the year, during which I spend time exploring the local sites with my students, by exploring the various cultures within our community through language, foods, style, and the arts. For the other 2 1/2 months of the year I pick a place out of the U.S. to live as a student and explore through the eyes of a local.

Roller skates are awesome! I've been wanting to do skating with the old-school skates (not blades) for so long! I like your suggestion of doing something you've never done before. I've always believed in trying new things to spice up your life and be more worldly. Good for you for getting out there!! :)

Staycations are so much more relaxing than traveling to some farway place. No need to back, stress over forgetting something, drive, overspend, etc.

How do I live life to the fullest? Well, I delight in little things,I look for something amusing while I am at my job, I'm a cashire and I am there eight hours a day, 40 hours a week. So my life pretty much is that. But what I also do is I focus on how wonderful it is to feel your smile, to feel how great it feels to tense and release the muscles in your arms. To be aware of the postive people around you. To notice the little things that little children do when they get to help mama put the grociers on the conveyer belt. When I'm not at work, I'm usually at home learning a new italian song and trying out different vocal techniques because my dream is to become a singer. Even though I am 23 I started blowing bubbles, a few years ago I never would have thought to allow myself such embarrasment but really I realized its my life and it gives me joy. Isn't that what living is allabout? So I blow bubble and watch my 6 month old puppy chase them. One day when it had just rained in upstate new york I went outside and the grass was still wet, I blew bubbles withh my puppy and much to my surprise when they landed on the grass they did not pop. They just settled on the grass. I blew so many that when I was done it looked like their was a feild of bubbles! Hmm what else do I do? Oh yes, I color in those paint by number paintings with crayons and markers. I have given many away as gifts. I try to laugh as much as I can, and create situations so that the people around me will laugh. Love that energy. So yeah that is basically it. But I know this is just the beginging.:)
