Ways to cut that salon bill!

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

Looking to get a haircut, highlights, or a dye but just can’t fork over that large salon bill? Well I have some great money saving places to go! Check out the Aveda Institute or the Paul Mitchell School to get your tresses taken care of. Just contact the school and set up an appointment with one of their near graduating students for an affordable new look. I’ve tried this myself and have saved $$$, a haircut and highlights was around $80 and looked salon professional. What do you think, would you go to a school to get your hair done? Do you have any budget hair tips? Let’s hear them.
And for every valid web comment on this blog only we will give you a Free $5 e.l.f. coupon via email just to say thanks (1 per person, to the first 100 posts only).

I learned how to cut my own hair. I use high quality drug store boxed haircolor/highlights. I get tons of tips from my friends on what works for them and get their opinions on colors and cuts. There's really no telling how much money I've saved just by doing everything myself.

I'm 25 and I've never actually been to a salon, ever. It's always been schools for me. A shampoo and cut for $10? How can you pass it up?! I've got a branch of The Salon Professional Academy here, and the girl I have is amazing. I have to admit, I'll probably follow her when she graduates. She's that good!

No, I would not get my hair done at a school, regardless of how much I saved! It's not worth the risk in my opinion. If you have to pay to have it redone, it will cost even more - no savings there!

I would say sometimes shopping around is the best way to save money. In 9th grade, I just couldn't wait to get my hair cropped off, and my friend's mom offered to do it for free. My fried was a local model with straight hair; I didn't know her mom was not accustomed to cutting wavy hair or the havoc the wrong chunky layers could wreak. I looked like a guy. A guy with hair that stood straight up in the back. My family paid a salon to have my hair permed so my hair had some kind of shape while it grew out and wouldn't stick straight up. Lesson learned: sometimes free isn't better. I always try to check out who's cutting my hair now and prefer local stylists to chains where you don't know who you'll get sometimes.

I would go to a school to get my hair done if need be. The public helps these students progress into their careers and why not? If it helps us save money and great a great new look, it will help them with their portfolios.

I love Aveda for cheap waxing but I've noticed that some Aveda's don't have stylists that can do African American hair. However this was a few years ago I would love ot hear that this has changed! I sure could use a cheap hair makeover. :)

My friend was actually a student at a Paul Mitchell school and I went to her get my hair done and I was so happy with the results. She knew exactly what I wanted and what would look good on me. She was the one who took me from a really long length to a cute modern bob and also helped me donate my hair. I would highly recommend it Paul Mitchell schools. They have instructors that make sure that the students are on track and that the clients are happy.

I would only go to a school to get my hair done if the place looked sanitary and legit. One way to help your hair from heat damage and from those ugly split ends is to use less heat on your hair. If you do decide to use some type of hair appliance, I suggest you use a heat protecting spray! Afterward, if your hair gets a little frizzy, use just a little bit of conditioner! :) I use Pantene Pro V.

Hmm...it's a good idea, but also a thinker. On the one hand, a bad haircut can be pretty upsetting. On the other hand, the longer my hair gets, the more aggravated I get with it, and I really can't afford a salon at this time. Hmm...

I am an veracious reader of beauty magazines and have been seeing a lot of recommendations of E.L.F. products. I was having problems finding them in our regular stores, so like everything else I need, I just "googled" E.L.F.! Once I found their website, I was AMAZED AND THRILLED at their prices and choices of products. Once I received the products, then I became REALLY excited! I'm so glad that I found make-up that is not only affordable but fun to wear and is of such great quality. Thanks E.L.F.!

I've actually thought of the idea of going to a school to get my hair done. The truth is, however, that I'm painfully afraid to do so since I've been going to the same place for over 8 years. Maybe one day I'll brave up and give it a try...

In Toronto, there's a school called Marca College Of Hair And Esthetics, located on Danforth Avenue in Toronto, Canada. Anyone can get a manicure/pedicure at a very affordable cost, haircut, style, colour for a very good deal. I'm for it definitely. Not only esthetic schools but there are also university and college students about to graduate learning dentistry or dental hygiene so they have separate buildings that are a part of the university or college that accommodate the public and service them for much less than what you would pay for at a dental office. The students work is marked by a dentist who would walk around and observe. I've been to these student dental offices myself for check-ups when I couldn't afford a dentist at the time.

Being a students not too long ago I know the other side. If your coming to a school for a haircut or color please remember that we are still learning. Make sure that the instructors are involved in all aspects and be patient... those highlights that took half an hour at your old salon can easily take two at a school. With that said there really is no reason to feel iffy and we LOVE when we get a trendy young person to work on rather than the usual senior citizen perming crowd.

I have started going to the cosmetology school at the local community college to get my hair cut and highlighted (as well as for pedicures!). It's a LOT cheaper than going to a pricey salon! I've liked the results of all my services by the students! The only downside that I can see is that you have to allow yourself a LOT of time! These are students still, and they take much longer than a visit to the regular salon (give yourself an extra hour!). But definitely worth the price! I've saved a lot of $$$!

I know people that have done this. I have had friends that went to cosmetology school and they have done my eyebrows and nails. I would go for the hair if you know the person or had good recommendations. I would recommend to get your pedicure because they sanitize everything unlike a lot of professional places that don't. When they are doing it at school its a manitory to sanitize. So girls if you are afraid of hair cuts go for the pedicures its worth and you save money and avoid getting fungus too!

A haircut is only about 15 bucks and it looks professional. The students are very careful and they explain everything really well =) I would recommend it to everyone!

I'm Asian with really thick and slightly frizzy hair; when I was little my mom would get a workout just trying to wash my hair properly. I would always go to an Asian hair salon b/c I need someone with experience cutting Asian hair and end up paying at least $30 just for a haircut. Now I pay half that much by going to someone (who used to work in a hair salon) who works parttime in their home. I wouldn't really go to a school just b/c I have had haircuts from newly graduated hair dressers and did not like my haircut. I need experience at least when it comes to a good haircut.

I'd go to a school to get my hair done if I had time.. Last time I went there, my haircut ended up taking much longer than I usually get it done, but I don't blame the girl since she was still a long way from graduating (and it was cheap). But if I had the time to go get my haircut, then I would go back and get it done there. Otherwise, there's a salon across the street from the school that's a little more expensive and takes a lot less time. =)

I would absolutely get my hair done by a graduate from beauty school. In fact my next hair appointment is going to be done at our local Visible Changes school. I have one budgest hair tip, I'm not sure if this is all visible changes, but the first time I scheduled an appt with them they gave me a card to use for the next 3 visits that I could use for discounts as long as I made the appt with the same hairdresser. It saved me lots of money! The next visit was 10% off, then 15, then 20. Like I said it saved me lots of money :)

I would recommend it! The last time I scheduled a hair appointment was at Aveda Luxe Salon and it probably has branched off from Aveda Institute but their stylists were amazing! I'm not sure if there was a more affordable deal for a haircut and highlights. I asked and it totaled to $120 for haircut and highlights!

When you go to a school to get your hair done, take a look at all of the hairdressers' hair. If it looks bad, dry, frizzy etc.. then run! They all work on eachother, so their hair is a good representation of what you'll get.

I went back to my natural hair color for the first time in 10 years! No more highlights, but my rich, shiny chocolate-color hair only requires two trips to the salon a year (versus once a month for highlights!) and I've gotten an abundance of compliments (usually that I look about five years younger than I am). Yay!

Living in NYC gets a little pricey so I'm always looking for cheaper alternatives for anything and everything. I usually go to Chinatown -- wash cut and blow dry for $30 (some places $20). The downside, there's a language barrier sometimes. I've heard about people going to beauty schools and I think I'll give it a try. I also heard Paul Mitchell Schools do color correction on botched hair coloring jobs.

I am currently a Cosmetoloy student at an AVEDA Institute in Michigan. While I completely understand saving money I would encourage people to really research what they are doing to their hair before they do it; especially color. Before coming to COS school I used to do a lot with my hair regarding color and had some successes, but many more failures. It was not until I learned what to put on my hair and how that I began to gain the results I desired. If I can give any tips to anyone it would be that if you are going to do your own color, make sure you choose the right volume for your hair since using the wrong one gives "hot roots" (where the hair at the root does not match the rest). Also, make sure you are not using anything in your hair containing "metallic salts." They are damaging to the hair and do not flow well with salon standard color. Be careful with highlights too. Make sure they do not process for too long or you will completely weaken and dry the hair out. I only share this because I made so many mistakes prior to school that I would not want anyone else to suffer through. Lastly, if you do decide to go to a school (I highly recommend) make sure you have a thorough consultation and use color swatches if needed so you are on the same page. AVEDA schools are great because you can customize your hair color to meet your needs and you pay half of what you would in a regular salon.

I just cut 12 inches off my haif and donated it. The hair cut was free, but the highlighting was not. Since my hair was cut above my shoulder, I am now able to color it and highlight it myself. I went to a discounted beauty supply store and got the necessary items I needed such as hair color for stubborn gray, highlighter and the starter tools I needed for less than $20. Next time I do it again, I would just have to pay for the color and highligter which will only cost about $8.

I really hate going to the salon to get my hair done. I have thick, wavy hair so while some stylists gets angry and tell me to get a relaxer (which I don't want), other salons will blow dry (or should I say blow fry)my hair until it's super straight(I don't like that either; too much heat on my hair). And to get your ends trimmed cost like $10-15(Too much). So I just do my own hair and cut my own ends.

funny you should ask. I just got back from a hair cutting school. I got my hair cut and very nicely styled for $ 10 !!! I got a simple trim, but they really styled the hair up. While I was there I asked about the make up they used... They gave me a free makeup application. They asked me what I had been using, and I told them ElF. They asked me more and the more I told, the more interested they became. I am going back next week for a facial !

First off I would like to say thank you to elf. I will be 70 in a few days, and have never used anything but lip stick in my life. I have always had great skin, and looked youthful. No one can believe my age. I have gone to beauty schools for my cuts and perms and have always had great results. My hair is hard to work with, as it is naturally blonde and now is turning grey. I now go go Wal Mart for my hair as they have a 30% discount for seniors on Tuesdays. A cousin of mine sent me a forward a couple of months ago,for E.L.F. and I almost deleted it, because I didn't use make up. After looking a the great prices, I decided to give it a try thinking what can I loose. With out telling my husband what I was doing I ordered the tinted moisturizer with the spf 15. Some mascara in browns, and the clear eye brow/mascara, and some blush. After using it for a couple of weeks my husband asked me what I had been doing to my face, He said it looked so alive, and my skin was looked so soft, That what ever I was doing to keep it up, because I looked so much younger. A new neighbor thought I was in my 50's. I use the brown mascara on my brows and the clear eye lash/brow over the top of it. My brows are filling out now, and look great. Thanks

Yes Ladies, it is all about saving money, but I work at a salon, I put myself through school and raised my 2 sons on my career as a pro stylist. Just remember that corrective coloring and cutting will cost you more in the long run....because we have twice as much work to do to fix it. Alot of smaller neighborhood salons, charge close to what the schools are charging and your getting PROFESSIONAL work done at the salon. The schools are making money from the tuition that they charge the students. And most of my experience (15 yrs.) came from working in the salon.

I think I would go to a school to get my hair cut. I would not go to get my hair dyed because if they were to mess that up then it would take too long to fix. I have a friend at work who is going to Cosmetology School and she is always trying to get us to let her cut our hair. She finally convinced one of the ladies that works with us to perm her hair. She totally ruined her hair, it did not curl it looked as if she had gotten bad highlights. Then she tried convincing another lady to cut her hair. When asked what if she were to mess up, she responded by saying, "Well hair grows doesn't it?". I would rather just cut my own hair. -J

Also, instead of going into the salon and paying them to cut your bangs before you haircut appointment just learn how they cut your hair so you can do it yourself! This has save me so much money.

As a stylist, we love our clients and those who haven't come to us, and we're suffering just as our clients are. Find a salon that offers dicounted services due to this economic hardship, because we need you just as bad as you need us!! love you e.l.f!!

Both my husband and I go to the Aveda Cinta school in S.F. and both of us have had a great experience with them. We went from paying $300 for two cuts and color for me to paying around $70. The only problem is that I love my student stylist so much that I may have to follow her after school and go back to paying those high prices!
