Beautify Your Hair

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

If your hair looks good, people focus on your face (and make-up).  Here are some simple tips to get your hair in tip top shape:
  1. If you blow-dry your hair after washing, try adding a couple of drops of olive oil to your conditioner. It will make your hair soft and smooth without making it frizzy.
  2. Unless you have a dry scalp, or use a scalp-specific conditioner, you can cut down on the amount of conditioner you use and still maintain the same benefits! Use only about half of what you use for shampoo and avoid using it on your scalp (just apply it from an inch above your root to the end. Your hair will look and feel the same, and your purse will get heavier with the money you save over time.
  3. Dry scalp may be caused by your water. I highly recommend a filter which will benefit your hair and skin, but if you can’t afford one, a quick fix is to make one: Take a 2-liter bottle and cut it in half. Layer the top part (closest to the bottle neck) with a thick layer of cotton balls, then a layer of gravel, then a layer of sand, then a layer of cotton balls and repeat until you reach the top of where the bottle was cut. Next, cut out a hole in the bottom-half of the bottle (make the hole large enough to engulf your current shower head). Tape the bottle back together using duct tape and then tape the entire bottle to your shower head. Turn the water on low and let it run for a minute before getting in.

I enjoy reading your blogs, Scott! I'm going to make the shower head filter. It sounds like a cool project. You are so awesome! :)

If you find all this necessary, you may want to have a plumber come and make sure the pipes going up to your shower head can support the weight of a 2 liter bottle filled with gravel & sand. Most of those pipes are thin PVC (plastic) and can easily burst if too much weight/pressure is put on them. Also, duct tape is not waterproof on the adhesive side, so if water gets under the tape (through the cut bottle, or from it not being sealed fully on the shower head) the whole thing is going to fall apart and leave a mess of goopy adhesive on your shower head. If you really find it necessary to filter your shower water, invest in a real filter. Oh and by the way, a filter alone doesn't solve the problem of hard water. It only purifies it. Hard water, which damages hair, needs a water conditioner to make any real difference. I've read about many celebrities that wash their face & hair in certain types of bottled water like Evian or Fugi. That may be an option for some, if you can afford it. I think though really, it's all a matter of choosing the right products for your hair as well as what works based on your home's water condition. Stop using products with alcohol. Contrary to this blog, put conditioner on your roots. I used to have the greasiest hair and someone told me to moisturize my scalp more often. I was skeptical. But listen... after a few days of a oily mop... my hair improved. It stopped being so greasy because my scalp was trying less to condition my hair on its own. Also stay hydrated. There is nothing worse for your skin and hair than your body not having enough water. Drink up your 8 glasses of water a day and see if it doesn't clear up that dermatitis, or acne, or dandruff. Seriously.
