Ten Biggest Makeup Mistakes

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Make-up can be used in so many different ways – to freshen a tired face, glamorize a look, define features – the list is endless. No matter what you are wanting to achieve with your make-up application just make sure you are following these 10 basic rules:

  • Don’t wear heavy, defined lip liner around your mouth. These days even patting your lipstick shade onto your lips with your finger creates a modern affect. If it looks like your lips have been stained by sucking a lolly pop it’s good!
  • Never leave your eyebrows unplucked – this looks unkept, messy and boyish. Groomed brows ‘open up’ your eye area and create a groomed, polished appearance.
  • Do apply a cream textured concealer over your eyelids and under your eyes. This will freshen the skin around your eyes and make you look years younger. Use just enough to ‘dumb’ the discoloration around the eyes, blend well and then set your concealer with a little loose powder for holding power.
Check out elf’s cream textured concealer:
Rather than applying your bronzer all over your face, add color and glow to your face by focusing on the apple of your cheeks. Think about why you should not add bronzer all over your face = you even out your skin tone with a foundation and powder that matches your skin color exactly, then you apply a bronzer all over your face that does not match the color of your skin, basically undoing all the evening out your created with your foundation and powder. It makes no sense to undo what you have just tried to achieve.
These elf products work beautifully on the cheek area to add color and glow to the face: bronzing powder, radiance blusher, and all-over color stick.
And here is a video of how it’s done:

  • Never wear a foundation and powder that is either to light, to dark, to pink or to orange for your skin tone. Aim for more yellow toned shades that look more natural on ALL skin tones. Test your shades in day light and if you can see the shade on your skin – IT IS WRONG. Foundation and powder should look like skin, not like a layer of make-up sitting on top of the skin.
  • Don’t apply one shade of eye shadow all over your eyes from your lashes to your eyebrows. Eye shadow has been designed to enhance the eyes by defining and adding shape to the eyes. Always use a highlighter (light shade like cream or off white) under your eyebrows. Also use it on your eye lid if your lid is barely visible. Apply a more neutral deeper shade through the crease of your eyes to create definition. Purchase one of these ultra cool e.l.f. kits to really bring out your eyes:
  • Never go to bed wearing your make-up. During the night your skin needs to breathe and pump out any impurities onto the surface for you to wash away in the morning. A make-up free face is the only way to hit the sack.
  • If you have small eyes don’t apply a dark eyeliner inside your eyes. This will close your eyes up and make your eyes look even smaller. Use a white pencil inside your eyes to effectively freshen and ‘open up’ your eyes. Try the white e.l.f. pencil:
  • And last but no least, carry your look with confidence and you’re half way there. Draw some inspiration from checking out these make overs:

Have a great day!

Really good tips, but I'm not sure what it means about using a white pencil "inside" your eyes. I also don't like the feel of concealer on my eyelids, makes them feel too heavy. Is this really necessary?
