Beauty Weight?

Friday, August 19, 2011

Alert, another beauty pageant scandal has arisen.  Apparently Cynthia De La Vega claims officials took away her Miss Mexico title because she gained 6 pounds.  The 19-year old was set to represent her country in November’s Miss World Pageant.

"I was very, very excited because I thought this would be a great experience," Cynthia said, adding of her reaction to the stripped sash: "I was very sad and very deceived. I cried and cried and cried."

Do you think weight is terms for elimination in a beauty pageant?

It shouldn't be an issue, sadly we live in a world where image is everything and some people take that perception and warp it horribly

This is a really sad case, her weight should not be an issue. Believe it or not these are the things that cause the weight issues and low self esteem n alot of people. So sad

It's completely ridiculous. A lot of those girls are super thin as it is and it's actually healthier if they gained a few pounds. & She could have gained in muscle too.

This is so exhausting, watching these beautiful women get their titles stripped away after winning them. I think someone's weight should certainly be a factor during the competition, but once she's won the crown, it's hers. As Seth Meyers would say, "I'm beginning to think the best way to win a beauty pageant is to come in second place and just wait."

omg that is so sad. i think this is terrible for the self esteem of girls. i mean she is only 19 years old and 6 pounds is really nothing. i mean i gained 7 pounds my freshman year of college (and i only weigh 100) and some people said they couldn't even notice, so i doubt 6 pounds on her was noticeable. also, that doesn't have anything to do with inner beauty, which is what these contests always say they are all for anyway, i just feel... so bad for her.. and her family.. and all of the girls that might take this to mean that gaining weight means losing respect.

i dont think this is fair! :( just because she gained 6 pounds doesnt mean that she still isnt skinny! i think that media is pushing everybody to be skinny! :(

Err, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Mexican beauty standard such that a little bit of curve is actually appealing? Isn't this decision to strip her of her crown kind of farting in the face of their own cultural standards? I mean hey, no matter how you slice it, it's bull*%&t, but this smells doubly so.

I definitely don't believe that weight should be any reason to strip someone of their sash. If she loss a lot of weight and was anorexic it would be a different issue and I guess if she gained a lot of unhealthy weight to wear she was obese, neither would set a good example for other young girls or women. But I still don't believe weight should be a criteria for stripping someone of their sash.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! That is so sick that something like that should be a factor. They should focus on being healthy and beautiful on the inside as well as out, and something as insignificant as 6lbs? Come on! One of the most beautiful things about Latina's is that we have shape, and focusing so much on weight makes everything seem as if beauty is only in one particular body type or 'image' and mindsets like THAT is what can cause psychological problems in societies.

It shouldn't be. It's showing younger girls that gaining a few pounds is wrong. We live in a world where people think this is right its not. We need to show young girls that beauty is skin deep

Wow really? She is a beautiful woman and I doubt that 6 pounds even made a difference in her appearance. Beauty contestants should be judged on their inward and outward beauty, not their size. There are so many people who are heavier than her and are absolutly beautiful.

It's so disappointing to see what kind of world that we live in that would cause such pain to someone like this. Weight shouldn't be a factor in eliminating someone, once she's earned the crown it shouldn't be taken away. This sends a horrible message to young teens that in essence can and will cause self esteem issues.

Weight should not be the reason for an elimination in a beauty pageant. Weight has nothing to do with pageants, it should be the inside beauty that counts.

not necessarily, but beauty paegents definitley look at the "beauty" aspect so you need to be fit or slim.

I don't think it's right for her to be stripped of her title. A lot of these girls are very thin, and as far as "representing their countries", I don't think they are representing people by being stick-thin. I think there are so many other factors that should be looked at. Most of them could use a little weight-gain anyway, and 6 pounds could easily have come from gaining muscle, especially if she changed up her workout routine. And even if not, I'm sure she still looks great! Probably even better. It's sad that we live in a society that would put such pressure on this kind of an issue

i think that weight could be a reasin for elimination but only in very extreme cases, not over 6 pounds!! that is ridiculous! maybe if she had gained 50 pounds....

That is HORRIBLE.But then again what did she expect in a "beauty pageant"? I feel sorry for her for many reasons. Those things are shallow and stupid.Love yourself no matter what judges think.

This is truly disgusting! weight does not determine someones self-worth, or beauty for that matter. Those 6 pounds make her look just as gorgeous as with out, I am sure. Whats 6 pounds? we all gain and lose that over the holidays! This is truly saddening that this is what the world comes down too.

This is soo crazy! She won the title fair and square, they shouldn't be allowed to take it away because she gained 6 pounds! Her 6 pounds is probably still thinner than many other woman out there. Life is unfair this way :(

How rude. She is still gorgeous even with the added weight. It'll just make her look more natural rather than skin and bones.

That is honestly the stupidest thing i ever heard. Now because she is insecure she is going to try and lose it and as we can see in the picture she obviously doesn't need too.
