Beauty Secrets Revealed!

Monday, August 15, 2011

This month, I’d like to tell you a few secrets that “they” don’t want you to know. These tips are my inside secret as a formulator and inventory of how to re-activate and extend the life of your favorite cosmetics!

1. Mascara reactivation

After your mascara’s turned into a thick, powdery, dead mess you can bring it back to life! To reactivate your mascara, simply add one to two drops of vegetable oil into the mascara tube and mix with the brush to reactivate the formulation. For a more patent shine – dip the brush bristles into Vaseline, then push the brush back into the tube.

2. Extended the life of your favorite Lipgloss and lipstick

Don’t you hate it when your favorite lipgloss or lipstick has been discontinued? Here’s a trick that will allow you to use the product for a few extra weeks while you’re looking for a replacement.

Start by extracting all of the lipgloss/lipstick from the original container (you may have to cut open a tube, or pull your lipstick out of the case) and put the product into the smallest ziploc bag you can get. Then add ½ of the equivalent amount of either  petroleum jelly, or your favorite clear lip balm/ lipgloss to the Ziploc bag. Massage the mixture together until the two items are blended and then cut off a very small piece of one of the ziploc’s bottom corners and apply.

3. How to fix a broken powder compact

Everyone knows what a purse looks like after their powder compact breaks. Here is my tip for fixing a powder compact that has shattered.

Pour the compact’s loose contents into a small ziploc bag and add about 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel. Massage the mixture together, then repack it into the compact. Once in the compact, place a sheet of paper over the powder and then place a book or cutting board over the sheet of paper. Gently but firmly press down on the book to re-set the powder into the compact and allow to fully air dry. Your compact will be good as new.

4. How to extend the life of your favorite discontinued eyeshadow:

For powder eyeshadow, simply mix-in some translucent powder. Use an iridescent powder to amplify the current color.

For cream based eyeshadows, start by extracting all of the cream from the original container (you may have to cut open a tube, or pull off the lid) and pour the product into the smallest ziploc bag you can get. Then add ½ of the equivalent amount of dimethicone cream. Massage the mixture together until the two items are blended and then cut off a very small piece of one of the ziploc’s bottom corners and apply.

Ooh, the mascara tip couldn't come at a better time. :] The broken powder compact idea is pretty neat too, but I don't know if I'll ever get to use it, my compact powders never break.

I have to say, the mascara one scares me a little because my mascara dissolves when my face gets oily. Other than that, these ideas are pretty neat.

Wonderful tips and very interesting to learn more of Scott-Vincent (I've watched him on a shopping network and wasn't aware of his affiliation with E.L.F.). I've worked in the cosmetic industry for years and never learned of these "secrets." Looking forward to putting them to use when necessary. I'm excited to receive my first order from E.L.F. Placed online this week. Thank you in advance!
