Nail Trend: Water Marbling

Thursday, May 03, 2012

I've been seeing posts all over the internet of this new nail trend called water marbling. It gives your nails a marble effect without making such a mess! Let's all give a round of applause to Esther for being such a cooperative elfette :)

The first thing you need is about 4-5 different color nail polishes lined up and loosely opened (you're going to have to work fast!).

You're going to need a paper cup filled with water, a toothpick, and a paper towel underneath to catch any mess. Next, you're going to need to tape your fingers around the edge of the nails to make for an easier clean up.

If you're going to use bright colors, I would recommend starting with a white base coat of polish so that the colors really pop, because there is no way of applying a second coat.

1. Place a drop of polish into the water, then quickly after place another drop of polish in a different color. Keep doing so with the 5 colors- it should look like a rainbow bulls-eye.

2. Take the toothpick and drag it through the pattern a few time until you get the pattern you want. Don't work slow with this, otherwise the polish will dry quickly.

3. Dip your finger into the pattern and pull it out of the water. The scotch tape should catch the rest of the polish that would've ended up on your fingers.

4. Repeat on the other nails and finish with a top coat!

What do you guys think of this new trend? Worth the effort?

-Patti, contributing elfette

I like the effect on the actual nail, but it leaves the nailbeds looking kind of sloppy. :/

I put vaseline on my little girls skin that surrounds the nail...I did it VERY carefully so I didnt get the vaseline on nail....the excess polish wiped right off!

i love how this comes out. i the only thing is i don't use the tape it seems to still get pretty messy and it can sometimes be difficult and time consuming. i always put vaseline around my nails it is very easy and quick to put on and the polish wipes right off. much easier and quicker than tape. give it a try and see how it works for you. :)

I like the idea, but I think it can look really good or terribly sloppy.

I think it looks wonderful, but as a working Mom probably would have trouble finding the time

I tried this after seeing it in a tutorial. It was very difficult and did not work for me. Maybe i should try vaseline around the nails!

I was terrified of doing it for the first time - I thought it would make such a mess. But, there are lots of tutorials on youtube that do a great job of showing how to avoid the mess. They also include all sorts of patterns to make in the polsih to transfer to your nail. Using the tape method shown above really makes clean up tons easier. It's a really fun way to get a unique manicure.

Not crazy about it, actually. Everyone's got their own opinion, of course, but I just think it looks sloppy - not something I would be interested in trying.

I think it's a cute idea, although a bit messy if you're not quite good at this technique.

It looks really cute but worth it for someone else to do it. I feel its a bit time consuming.

I don't like it. It's kind of cute when you look at it close up, but when you're looking at it from a distance it looks like your polish is chipped and that you applied it when you were drunk. Even my 18 year old daughter hates it which surprised me. I thought she would love it.

After dipping, you need to leave your fingers in the water and remove the top layer with a cotton swab so you aren't dragging all that extra polish out on your fingers. Also, instead of taping each finger, use Vaseline or cuticle oil around your finger and the polish wipes right off - any residue use acetone. I've been water marbling my nails for years.

It looks really cool. I think if someone is able to fine tune the process so the the nail beds look better it would be a lot more reasonable. For a special occasion it would defiantly be worth it.

Love the watermarble look! I've done this to my nails a few times. It's a learning process but once you have a few rounds under your belt...easy peasy!

Love this idea! Never seen it before! I think this also would look good if you did a base coat of black and did the bright colors also. This is definately one I'm gonna try! Thanks!
