Which Makeup is Appropriate for Work?

Sunday, August 05, 2012

When you're thinking about what makeup to strut at the office tomorrow, you may want to consider the findings in this recent study from the PLoS ONE journal. Twenty-five women of various races, ages 20-50, were photographed in four looks: bare-faced, natural, professional and glamorous, from no makeup to a lot of makeup. (picture below)

Of the 149 adults respondents (41% were men), the "professional" look was deemed the winner within seconds. The professional look was also the winner when 119 respondents were given unlimited time to examine the image. What does being the winner entail, you ask? It means the respondents thought that the professional look was the most likeable and made the woman look the most competent, as compared to the other looks. Another interesting insight is that, the "glamorous" look was thought to make the woman look untrustworthy.

At Elf, we LOVE experimenting with makeup (that's our job!) and are always working to incorporate the latest colors and trends into our daily looks. We understand it's not like this for every office but what you do guys think? Should women wear their own style at work or keep it to after hours? Do you think its different for every company? Give us your opinion!

I think it depends where you work. If you were in a office, then you should really think about having your make-up in neutral shades. Don't do your make-up with colors that are too bright. That will just make it harder for others to take your seriously.

I really think #1 is appropriate because its nude and neautral and isnt very bright. Ialthough it is neautral, it still makes us glow and look fabulous :)

I would say the neutral or professional ones would be best for most work places. It all comes down to where you work!

I think your makeup should be a direct representation of who you are.The job you should also represent who you are.I am in retail and yet I will wear the colors I feel make me happy for the day

I think it depends on the person and the type of makeup for example I think the first girl looks professional in all of them but I like the glamorous and professional looks best. The second girl I liked the neutral and professional best and the same with the third.I also think to look nice you don't need to wear a ton of bright colored makeup. I wear a ton of makeup but not bright colors I wear a lot because I have really pink skin so I wear foundation, powder, blush, lipstick, eyeliner and mascara everyday but I get told by people daily they love my look and it looks natural and professional. I think it really depends on the person.

I actually like the natural look better, I feel that even the professional look seems like too much makeup for everyday wear.

I saw it depends on where you work. If you work in the retail world especially a clothing store the glamorous looks would work well, but in an office setting the professional and neutral looks work best. For me a bare face would never work anywhere.

In the office - natural or professional look, dramatic/glamorous will seem rather over the top. Barefaced - also no good, people will think you're a sloppy character. There are ways to look trendy even when the color palette is a bit subdued - it's the small details like shape of eyebrow, color of lipstick... one does not have to wear the full arsenal to be fashionable :)

I think a no makeup look is not the best look, unless you are on an assembly line or wear masks on and off throughout the day. I think for most places of work, a moderate use of makeup is always appropriate - the third picture in from the left, is a good example. I just think is is nice to look at a face that has some makeup applied, than a face with none at all.

I think makeup should be a representation of who you are. For me, the brighter the better! I don't think your makeup should make people think any less of you; it it just an extension of yourself!

I definately think where you work and what type of field you work in will influence how you do your makeup. I fyou have a more corporate job than you should be more conservative and if you live in a creative environment you can experiment a bit more

Obviously The Professional Look won, according to Men the look was "Competant." Women, we can translate that in a positive light I hope, since it is appealing overall. It's a healthy balance of color & care of ones appearance without overdoing it. The Glamorous look translation Night/Action! Women, we shouldn't take offense since we are well aware of our Daytime/Nightime Glamour Combos. We also talk about how color & application plays a huge role in deciding when & where to go subtle or go hard! We are an Image-Conscious Culture in America & to have the power of diversity in Makeup is a plus! Good Luck Nude/Naturals...
