How to: Lip Liner

Monday, August 13, 2012

Lip Liner is another tricky subject amongst makeup users. Should I use it? Do I need it? How do I even use it? I'll address all those issues here as the rules have definitely changed. Although Lip Liner seems outdated, it can actually be really neat when used correctly. It can plump up thin lips and add shape, as well as making your lipstick last longer! I definitely do not recommend using a Lip Liner darker than the shade of your lipstick- THAT look is out dated. Try a Lip Liner either the same shade as your lipstick or one shade darker. The whole point of Lip Liner is to look as natural as possible.

When applying lip liner, make sure not to over draw too much or you'll risk looking unnatural. Draw over the natural curve of our lips and fill in your WHOLE lips, not just the edges. Applying Lip Liner as a base really help your lipstick last longer. Instead of tracing your lip shape, drawing over the natural curve will make your lips look more defined and more plump. If you have thicker lips and don't need to add volume, Lip Liner is a great way to keep the lipstick from 'bleeding' out around the lips.

After filling in the whole lip with Lip Liner, apply your lipstick and blend it into the liner so that it looks seamless. Practice with nudes and light pinks to get the hang of it and get used to it. When you feel you have mastered it, go for colors like red or hot pink!

- What's your stance on Lip Liner?

I think it's good as long as you don't end up with the really obvious line! I hate that!

I don't actually like it.. But I see so many people work so well with it, that perhaps I just don't know how to use it right.

I love using lip liner! Even though I have full lips, over-lining just a little makes they appear really plump and kissable as well as more defined in the "cupid's bow' area. I often use liner with a touch of gloss in lieu of lipstick because it gives a softer, more natural look.

I love lip liner. If you youtube Kandee Johnson videos she has a great how to on plumping lips. I have average to slightly small lips but I'm obsessed with plump lips, now most people think that I have plump lips because I use lip liner and a lighter gloss.

I love it, because I just usually line my lips and go with a gloss. Sometimes, if I like the shade of lipstick, I'll just go with that.

I think for thin lips a liner is a must. I have tried to use it but don't really notice a difference with or without the liner. Love lipstick regardless! I also ran into issues where I had liners that would not match up with one or more of my lipsticks so just quit using and buying them.

Lipliner is so necessary for helping lipstick not feather. I love filling in all my lips with liner and then applying lipstick.

Lip liner is great. There is no need to outline your lip and go wider than your natural lip line, but if you use it to simply color within the natural contour of your lips, the lipstick applied on top of the lip liner has more staying power. Your lips will still have color even after eating/drinking. That alone makes the effort worthwhile.

I love using e.l.f. Studio Lip Liner & Blending Brush (Natural) to add shape and make my lipstick last longer. I use a natural color because I want it to look like I am not wearing liner. I do not think you should use lip liner to outline your lips a darker color than you lipstick but many people like that look.

At my age, 59, I have very small heart shaped lips that need just a little more definition. Lip liner works very well if I don't make the line too harsh, even with red lipstick. The nude lipliner works well just a little outside my natural lip line to keep the other colors from running as well. I love Elf's Lip Liner brush, too!

I used to use lip longer but have found I don't need it. If I really want my lipstick to stay in place or to add dimension then I will use it and blend my entire lip before lipstick. I think it strongly depends on the lip and what looks best for you.

I absolutely love lip liners! It can bring a lipstick color to a whole new level with the blending of the two colors and take bring a whole new dimension into play! It can make darker colors more dramatic and intense, and make lighter colors more defined.

I like to idea light pink lip gloss under my fire house red lipstick buy only fill the center lip and then line the lips. This can make it look as though you have a blended two tone. Great for picture shoots.

Yes use lipliners. Especially for photographs. If lips are small, line them just outside of the natural lip line. For full lips, line on natural lip line. Start with a nude color until you get the hang of it.

I love lip liner, I think its the best invention ever. It's perfect to make your lips look full and pouty. I like to wear mine a shade and a half darker than my natural lips because if you feather the color out it gives you a voluminous kissable look. As Patti states, it does hold a longer wear if you wear it underneath your lipstick...it acts as a lip primer almost.

I love lip liner! I don't use it all the time, but when I do it definitely helps my lipstick stay on longer. I have pretty small lips so it also helps to make them look a little bigger, which is always awesome.

I think lip liner is good for what it's supposed to be used for; lining your lips. Kind of making your lips a coloring space to evenly fill in with lipstick

I like to use lip liners to give my lips definition. Sometimes I use it under lipstick to create different lip colors. Sometimes I use them itch just a simple gloss. I always feel like I have a more finished look when I use them....

Lipliner is awesome as long as its close to the color of the lipstick you are wearing. Neutral lipliners are great because you don't have to worry about color blending, yet the wax keeps your lipstick from bleeding and feathering. Just please, don't use black.

I absolutely LOVE lipliner...but especially yours. I have a teeny weeny upper lip that would not exist except for 'cheating' with lipliner. I use lipliner, your $1 lipstick and then a plumping clear gloss over all.....lasts quite a while. Agree with another comment that you need more colors of lipliners....very few actually match your lipstick....kinda strange....

Typically, I do not put on lipstick w/o applying liner. It is my belief that when the lips are lined properly, it gives your finished look a more defined and elegant look. You are able to create different effects with lipliner and I love having that option...I don't leave home w/o my liner!!!

I don't use lipliner anymore. When you fill your lips with lipliner and then use lipstick or gloss over it, it's kind of making the lipliner thinner and it goes away. In the end, the only thing that you see is the lipliner on the contour of your lips. When I want my lipstick or gloss to stay longer or I want extra definition, I use lip stain instead and VOILA ! It's doing the same job that the lipliner but it stays in place for a very long time.
