e.l.f.'s Guide to Eyeliner

Monday, September 17, 2012

There are MILLIONS of different eyeliners on the market today confusing us to the point of giving up! Fear not, we're here to tell you how to use them and what works best for you!

1. Kohl/Pencil: This is probably the easiest form of eyeliner and is used amongst beginners and experts! Kohl or Pencil eyeliners are applied by literally just drawing across your lash line. For a defined line, sharpen the pencil for a fresh pointed tip and line as close to the lash line as you can, carefully. Kohls are also great for creating smoky eyeliner or eyeshadow looks. Just apply the liner as you normally would and smudge it out with either your finger, a Q-Tip, or even a pencil brush. For more precise application or if you want to try a winged look, use an Eyeliner Brush to pick up some eyeliner from the Kohl/Pencil and line eyes with ease. Kohl/ Pencil Liner is also the most common used eyeliner for lining the upper and lower waterline (the line inside your eye). (Try our Shimmer Eyeliner Pencil in 'Blissful Blush' for a brightening effect)

2. Cream Eyeliner:  Cream Eyeliner is my personal favorite. This eyeliner is waterproof so no matter how you wear it, it will last without giving you raccoon eyes at the end of the night. Cream Eyeliner seems intimidating because you need to use it with a brush, but in my opinion it's the fastest and easiest eyeliner to use. All you need to do is pick up a little bit of the color on an Angled Brush or Eyeliner Brush (not too much!) and line the eyes carefully. The beauty of Cream Eyeliner is that it is more forgiving when applied, as opposed to Liquid Eyeliner. Cream Eyeliner can also be smudged out when applied to achieve a sultry, smoky look but make sure to smudge it immediately after you apply it because the product will stay put once it's dried. Cream Eyeliner can also be applied to the waterline and will probably last longer than Pencil/Kohl. Another added bonus- it can be used as a cream eyeshadow or an eyeshadow base when applied and blended with your fingers! Kudos for multi-functional products! (Try our Cream Eyeliner in 'Teal Tease' for a bright, fun look)

3. Liquid Eyeliner: Liquid Eyeliner is every beginners worst nightmare. Although it does achieve the most beautiful result in all eyeliner categories, Liquid Eyeliner takes patience and practice. This eyeliner in my opinion, takes the longest to apply. You need to steady your elbow on a table or desk, lean your head back and look down into a mirror and line in short smooth strokes to achieve a perfect line free of track marks (you know, those little marks you get when your eyeliner skips and leaves spots without eyeliner). This liner will give you the prettiest, smoothest, and darkest line you can ever get with an eyeliner. Some people even trace out their line with Cream or Powder eyeliner first and then go over it with Liquid Eyeliner to really make the eyes pop. I do NOT recommend using this eyeliner on the waterline as it will irritate your eyes. Also, steer clear of using this eyeliner on your lower lash line unless your a pro because it will not apply as smooth as the top lid. This is also the best eyeliner for creating a wing because the brush is made just for that! (Try our Liquid Eyeliner in 'Black' for high drama).

4. Powder Eyeshadow: Eyeliner can actually be made from whatever eyeshadow you have laying around! Using a damp eyeliner brush or even a dry one, dip into powder eyeshadow and line your eyes as you would with any eyeliner. This gives a softer line to the eyes than a Cream or Liquid eyeliner would. This method of application ISN'T long wearing unless used with an eyeshadow primer. I used to apply dry eyeshadow as eyeliner every day for years because it was quick, didn't require precision, and looked so natural! (Try our Pigment Eyeshadow in 'Passionate Purple' for funky eyeliner)

5. Eyeliner Pen: This is the easier alternative to Liquid Eyeliner. You get the same defined effect, but with an easier application. All you do is take the cap off, and line the eyes with short strokes. The felt tip pen makes winging out eyes a breeze and is great for on-the-go application. I would NOT recommend using this eyeliner on the water line or lower lash line because it will irritate eyes and will not apply smoothly. Keep these eyeliners stored upside down in a cup to achieve maximum saturation. (Try our Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in 'Midnight' for effortless precision)

I like allmethods of applying eyeliner and all types, but in order from fave to least fave it would be cream liner, then pencil, then a eyeliner pen and lastly the liquid(idk wat it is but i just cant get the hang of it. i like to apply it but some days it looks good and some days it doesnt) cream is so much easier and i LOOOVE LOVE LOVE ELF'S cream liner in all the colors, they are all sooo pigmented and uber creamy, its a dream for someone into liner...love you elf

I am getting the essential eyeliner pen and I am hoping it's very pigmented because I want to create a thick eyeliner look.

e.l.f.'s cream liner is nice UNTIL IT DRIES. I have bought at least 6 that were half-dry by the time I got them. The packaging needs to be redesigned - contact with air is too much. Why has e.l.f. not used the same solution they have with the lip-balms? Inserting an extra seal under the cap is neither expensive nor troublesome.

I really love cream/gel eyeliner, but I haven't found the perfect eyeliner brush yet. My favorite is the ELF cream eyeliner in cooper, I wear it almost every day.

liquid eyeliner! easy to go use, easy to smudge and easy to clean up mistakes! colors are brighter and bolder than a pencil!

My personal favorite is kohl/pencil eyeliner. It is very easy to work with, for blending or achieving a crisp line. I usually layer eyeshadow of the same color directly over my liner, so the color really pops and lasts a long time!

I absolutely LOVE the Cream Eyeliner. After seeing raves about it on YouTube, I decided I absolutely needed to try it. I don't regret buying it! It goes on so smooth, especially if I use my ELF Studio Angled Eyeliner brush. My favorite shade is Coffee--it goes with EVERYTHING!

I love the liquid eyeliner pens, although cream shadow/liner is a close second. The best thing about the pens is that so many of them are very, very waterproof, so I don't have to worry about things getting smudgy. Something I've noticed is that the pens are starting to show up in different thicknesses, shapes, colors, et c. I love having all these choices!

I'm a fan of kohl. I love my brown kohl pencils. They really give a nice natural look. Or I can go dramatic with my black liner and do a smokey look. I do own a few ELF creme liners and pens, but I always find myself going back to pencil for everyday use.

I am an eyeliner Pen FAN! I love them! I am a bit shaky, and that close to my eyes I like to have as much control as possible. I also love that I can draw one constant line. Not sharpening is also a plus!

I've always used liquid eyeliner and was kind if scared about trying out a cream, but I swear by this stuff now and wont use anything else. Its so easy to put on. Then, hung out and spent the night at a friends house. I rub my eyes, and everything, EVEN SLEPT and after 24 hours also, IT STILL LOOKED PERFECT. I didnt look like a raccoon zombie or anything in the morning. This stuff is amazing. Love it!!! Thanx ELF for such a gud product!

I always reach for liquid! I find that because I have oily skin anything else smudges very easily. Plus I like the crisp lines & deep pigmentation you get with a liquid.

I'm fond of liquid liner. I'd like to try the pen but I feel like it would dry out like a marker` The only downside to the liquid liner is it's hard to clean between my eyelashes (and it drips on my eyelashes too!)~

I previously use pencil, then noticed it tugs my lids, so I switched to liquid, but I'm still struggling with the precision.. I may just try the cream liner!

Eye shadow all the way! I only use shadows because harsh lines around my eyes, which protrude, are not flattering at all. I blend the shadows in as well to just create enough color and definition behind my lashes. Plus, who doesn't have loads of shadows always laying around to blend and create the perfect "liner" color?

Liquid eyeliner is my favorite. I feel I get better application and a bolder line with the liquid. However, even though I don't like pencil E.F.L.'s Brightening Eyeliner has changed my mind. It goes on smooth with no tucking. I have been using that instead of my liquid eyeliner; as of late.

I like eyeliner pencils and cream eyeliner. It just seems as if I can control them better and they don't look harsh from the start.

I love elfs cream eyeliner in copper. It's the best eyeliner I've tried-so easy to apply and use. the color has just enough shimmer to accent without being over the top. I would love it if they could design the top to hold the brush, that would be wonderful!!

Personally, I love liquid eyeliner even though when it comes to liner I am more of a 'beginner'-- I'm way too flinchy about things near my sensitive eyes to use a pencil! I rarely wear eyeliner (because of that sensitivity, and because I'm about half-blind in one eye so it's hard to get liner even since those sensitive eyes can't handle contacts), but when I do, I've found my hand is steady enough that the liquid eyeliner I got in my last mystery bag gives me a great result. I've used a felt tip pen before, from a different company, when I was working a haunted house and needed an elaborate eye makeup for my graveyard ghoul look, and it was fine for its job, but I retired it quickly after, whereas I went out and bought a second liquid eyeliner after discovering how surprisingly easy it was for even a beginner to get the hang of.

I use liquid eyeliner, I have used this for the past 13 years and love it. I've tried pecil eyeliners and pen eyeliners, I don't like the how pencil eyeliner can smudge and I have a hard time using the pen because of the felt tip.

I started out using pencil eyeliner first because it was the easiest to use and it lasted the longest for your $. Then I started using eyeliner on my top lid. I used a liquid eyeliner which was my biggest nightmare!! It smeared all over my lid and one time it got into my eye :( and then I got my elf CREAM eyeliner:) it was soo easy to apply it was mess-proof and me-proof;) And it lasts FOREVER.! I will NEVER use liquid eyeliner again.!
