Hair extensions are often used to increase the length, fullness and appearance of hair. While it is useful in creating a look of luxurious locks of hair, it is also possible to style it in any preferred way. The key is properly maintaining the extensions so that it continues to look amazing even after it has been in for a week or longer. While some variation will exist between clip-on extensions and extensions that are woven into hair by a professional, the basic methods of caring for the material is similar. Use a Soft-Bristle Brush: It is important to brush out the extensions every day to avoid tangling that will pull on the extension and loosen the weave. When brushing the hair, it is important to always use a soft-bristle brush and gentle strokes. Work through the extension carefully to avoid pulling and use care when working out any tangles that might develop throughout the day or night. Clip-on extensions are brushed after removing the extension before bed. Brush the clip-on extensions gently to remove any tangles from the day.
The professional who weaves or glues the extensions into existing hair will provide recommendations for cleaning and conditioning products to maintain the extensions. Always using the recommended products will reduce the risk of accidentally damaging the extensions by using a shampoo that is too harsh. Recommendations are made based on factors like the material of the extension, personal hair type and any other factors that might impact the extension or personal hair. By using the appropriate product, it is easier to maintain the extensions properly. Put Hair Up to Sleep: Any extension that is woven or glued into the hair will need to limit the risk of tangles. Before going to bed, many stylists will suggest putting hair into a bun or putting it up as appropriate to the length of the extension to limit the number of tangles that develop overnight. This is not necessary for clip-on extensions that are removed at night. Dry With Medium Heat: It is possible to blow-dry extensions, but it will require a lower heat setting than the setting for real hair. Put the heat on a medium-low to medium temperature to avoid loosening the weave or melting the glue. The medium heat setting will reduce the risk of damaging the extension, but should only be used with extensions that are woven or glued into hair. Always allow clip-on extensions to dry naturally. Style Hair When Dry: Styling with a curling iron, straightening iron or any other product is possible if the extension is dry. Never use a curling iron or any other tool on wet extensions because it can cause damage and brittleness that ultimately results in dull extensions. Hair extensions are not challenging to maintain, but they do require careful handling. When managed properly, extensions can last for several months. The key is carefully handling the material and following a few basic steps to ensure that the extensions are clean, luxurious and free of tangles.
