Color Theory: Blushes

Choosing the perfect blush for our complexions isn't always the easiest task. Some say when it comes to being warm or cool toned, the choices of your blushes should change but I don't agree. I think any tone can wear any shade of blush as long as it corresponds to their skin tone (fair, medium, or dark). Here you'll find the complete guide to choosing the right shade of blush for you!

Fair Skin:

If your skin is in the fair range, go for light shades of blush. Anything too saturated in color may appear dirty or too dark when applied.

Pink Shade- Try our Baked Blush in 'Passion Pink' or our Cream Blush in 'Flirt'!

Peachy Shade-  Try our Baked Blush in 'Peachy Cheeky' or our Studio Blush in 'Candid Coral'!

Medium Skin:

If your skin is in the medium range, go for medium toned blushes. Nothing too light, and nothing too dark. I think medium shades have the ability to use a darker shade of blush but with a light hand. For instance, I use a bright hot pink blush (Our HD Blush in 'Diva'), but I use just the tiniest amount and it gives me the perfect flushed look.

Pink Shade- Try our Essential Blush with Brush in 'Blushing' or our Studio Blush in 'Mellow Mauve'!

Peachy Shade- Try our Studio HD Blush in 'Superstar' or our Studio Cream Blush in "Heartbreaker'!

Dark Skin:

If you have a dark complexion and find that blushes just don't show up on you, go for a dark shade with good pigment! Light blushes may look too ashy while medium blushes barely show up. Go for some high pigment color. Plum shades also look beautiful on darker skins.

Pink Shade- Try our Cream Blush in 'Seductress' or our HD Blush in 'Encore'!

Peachy Shade- Try our Mineral Blush in 'Peachy' or our Studio Blush in 'Blushing Rose'!

Plum Shade- Try our HD Blush in 'Showstopper' and our Mineral Blush in 'Plum'!

How do you choose your blush shade?

I usually choose whatever I'm loving! As long as my blush isn't TOO dark for my skin, I'm all for it. I'm contemplating buying the HD blush in Headliner. I also LOVE the studio blush in Mellow Mauve!

I choose the color based on my complexion, the season and with the current trends in mind! In the fall/winter, I use a cream blush and spring/summer, I use a powder blush to keep my face fresh!

I normally use one of my paler lipsticks and just blend for a natural look and I know that it will look good with my skin tone.

I stick to more bronzers than blush since I am more tropical weather. But I usually stick to whatever my skin complexion is.

I usually pick a pink tone that looks natural, and if it's too light I combine it with a bit of bronzer to darken it. I also add some bronzer underneath to contour my cheeks a little more.

You should really try to go for the color of blush that matches the undertone of your skin. I wrote a post about it on my beauty blog:

It definitely depends for me on if I have a tan or not. That being said I have found Tickled Pink to work well with or without!

I love blushes that blend multiple colors... then, I have the option of selecting just one color, or swirling all of them together! In my mind, it's an easy, no-brainer....

I try to coordinate my blush with both my skin tone and the tone of what outfit I'm wearing. If I'm wearing a cooler color, my blush is a cooler shade, etc. :)

Seeing as my skin tone is very pale, I typically go with lighter blushes that don't stnd out too dark. I've actually been using the Baked Blush in "Peachy Cheeky" and I absolutely love it!

I have fair skin and dark brown hair. Usually I use either a fair color or a medium color to contrast with my eyeshadow. So if I'm using a dark shadow, I'll use a light blush, for contrast and to not have my makeup seem overbearing. If I am using a light color shadow, I'll use the darker blush. I try to mix it up for variety.

The Studio Blush in Pink Passion is my go to color everyday. I'm light skinned and just a touch on my apples gives the perfect "glow from within"

I love ELF's mineral blushes...'Joy' is my absolute favorite and always looks great with my fair skin. I think classic pinks and reds are good for fall and winter seasons, and nothing too dark of course!

I really like the studio cream blush in flirt. I use different products for whatever season it is because I have combination skin. Creamy textures are what I like for winter and I end up setting it with a translucent powder anyway to remove oil.

I have a medium skin tone so for me most medium toned blushes, depending on pigmentation, give a natural flush of color. A darker shade of blush, depending on pigmentation, may give me a little brighter/deeper effect. If your blush is too light for you it will show up looking almost powdery or chalky on your skin instead of looking like a natural flush of color. Not cute!

I love that two of my absolute favorite blushes were mentioned for dark skin tones. Blushing Rose works wonders. It gives a nice warm glow to the cheeks and adds dimension to the face. Peachy just brightens everything up while remaining natural looking.

I have light/medium skin tone and a very pink undertone. Even after l have put on my face powder, my cheecks are still pink, so l don't require a lot of blush. One of my current favorites for fall though is Fuchsia Fusion. I love the shade and the glow that it gives, serving as a highlight and blush! Also, if l am going for a more soft look on the cheecks or during summertime, l will sometimes turn to Mellow Mauve! Great pigmentation on the studio blushes!

I love wearing a blush that goes best with my skin tone but in the fall/winter months I try to use a slight darker shade to give my skin that perfect flushes look. Lately I have been using my studio blush in candid coral and topping it off with the baked blush in passion pink

I choose my blush by my mood and the season. For summer and fall, I like darker shades, 2 shades darker than me at the most. I also use these darker shades when I'm feeling sexy. For winter and spring. I choose rosy pinks, I also choose rosy pinks when I'm feeling flirty and cute.

Actually I am rather bad with makeup, and I am trying to get better with it using ELF products. I'm biracial with very light skin that is a light yellow with pink undertones (at least I think it's pink). I bought the St. Lucia cream blush since it's a cream blush and I wanted something without shimmer or glitter, which a lot of ELF products sadly have (please come out with a matte pallette!). I am considering getting the HD blush, the only reason I haven't yet is the color I wanted was out of stock. Also, what does it mean to be warm or cool toned? Just a tad curious.

I think it all depends on what looks good on you, because i am african american with a mocha complexion and the blush in st lucia gives me a nice warm peachy glow and isn't too light for me, also glow from the essential line gives me a nice glowy look, of course because i am darker any blush i use you can still tell im wearing blush since darker tones dnt blush but its all about how it makes your face look and how intense it is or isnt, i love the darker blushes during the winter but for fall i love colors that give my face warmth and shimmer like candid coral, twinkle pink, peachy from the mineral line. For fall and winter i love mellow mauve, blushing rose, berry merry, and rose from the mineral line
