Cleaning Your Kit 101- Makeup Expiration

Friday, January 04, 2013

Ever find an eye shadow or an eye liner in the depths of your makeup drawer that’s drier than the Sahara Desert? Or how about a lipstick with who-knows-what growing on it? That makeup is expired! Yes, your makeup can expire, just like food. Toss out the eyeliner you used in high school, and replenish your makeup bag! Here’s my complete guide to makeup expiration.

Don't let cosmetics companies tell you what to do in order to raise sales. Instead, go by the texture, appearance, and smell of an item. As a general rule, wax and powder based products will keep much longer than liquid ones. Most things will keep indefinitely as long as you use clean brushes and fingers, keep the tops closed, and keep them out of steam, and strong light and heat. If you leave your makeup in your bathroom, your expiration times will be shorter and more like these described. You can extend the life of your products by sanitizing the cases with an alcohol wipe, and cutting the top 1/8 inch off of stick makeup with a sanitized knife. I don't know about you but I keep hand sanitizer right by my dressing table, and wash my hands before applying makeup.

I'd really appreciate being able to read the information on When to Trash your make up, but the text is impossible to read!! I even made the page display at 150% size and it just blurred the text, didn't help. So could you PLEASE make it bigger!?! Thank you!!

I knew all of this except the expiration on the sponges. I never knew they should be thrown out so soon.

FOR THE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T READ BECAUSE TEXT IS TOO SMALL =D 1) POWDERS (up to one year) - We like to change our powders every year. After a year we found that they start to dry our or even change colors in some cases. 2)CREAMS (up to 10 months)- creams should be replaced after 10 months. they tend to expire faster than powders because they contain moisture where bactiria can thrive. cream eyeshadows and eyeliners may dry before they expire , so they may walk themselvs outside the door for you! 3)LIQUIDS (up tp 1 year) - using a pump foundation , serum , or blush will help your makeup last for up to a year. if your using a liquid eyeliner that you double dip into chances are it will be contaminated after six months or you'll finish it before it expires. 4) PENCILS (up to 6 months) -pencils should be sharpened after every other use to keep them fresh and bactiria free. some pencils dry out faster than others , but a pencil will last you about six months 5) MASCARA (3-6 months) - trash your mascara after 3-6 months. keeping your mascara for more than its experation can lead to eye infections or irratation. We recomend marking the date that its been opened so you'll know when to throw it out. If you pump the wand in and out alot it will expire faster because the air will dry it out.

I don't see why my brushes have to be thrown out after a year if I clean them regularly.

I think these are on the short side of how long products are safe to use. However, I would most certainly not keep a mascara 6 months, maybe 3 months. Love that ELF products are affordable so I can replace things as need be without breaking the bank.

Brushes after ONE year?! I knew about makeup, but never thought about throwing out my brushes. Even the thought of trashing e.l.f. studio brushes after one year is enough to stop me in my tracks.

I can read this just fine, I don't know why everyone is saying it is so small. If you are using a computer and not a phone you should be fine...

These guidelines are fine (except the 1-yr brush life!) if you are using your makeup as most typically do. Most people ‘double dip’ (dipping into the same product with an already used brush, finger, or applying the product to the lips or eyes directly), and cross-contamination is definitely going to occur. Micro skin particles, oils, and other unseen things transfer from person-to-tool-to-product-and-back-again, and this leads to products changing, or even deteriorating without someone realizing it. Many with acne and/or sensitivities have found after keeping a good makeup hygiene routine, that their skin cleared-up substantially. Wash your hands well before applying your makeup. Use the back of your hand like a palette (just like the professional makeup artists do!) for your cream & liquid products. Dispensing product on the back of your hand keeps you from double-dipping. (Unless your foundation has a pump, then it stays clean.) Spritz powder and cream products with 70% alcohol, (wipe compact edges dry quickly) and let dry. Spray your pencils with the alcohol too before sharpening, & sharpen regularly so your are using fresh product. Sanitize brushes with a solvent based cleaner to maintain your brushes in-between shampooing (& shampoo 1-2 Xs a month). If treated well, a brush will last you for years.
