Melissa Handles Criticism with Class

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Source: AP

We were reading up on our celebrity gossip when we came across an article from People magazine. Apparently the Oscar-nominated actress, Melissa McCarthy, was referred to as "tractor-sized" in a nasty film review earlier this year.  From People

"The review – written in February by Rex Reed of the New York Observer, who panned the film, Identity Thief and called McCarthy a "female hippo" and a "gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious" – drew criticism nationwide."

However, being the confident, and beautiful, woman she is, McCarthy reacted calmly with her only question being, "why would someone O.K. that?"

We love Melissa and think her humor and charm make her a delight to watch on screen! We can't wait to see her alongside Sandra Bullock in The Heat later this month!

What's YOUR favorite Melissa McCarthy film?!

My favorite movie of hers was Bridesmaids but Identity thief is awesome. I can't wait till her new movie comes out with Sandra Bullock. You know people like Rex What's His Name should look at the acting and comedy timing of this actress. She can do drama and she can do comedy. How great is that! Yes she is obese...so what? That is her business and weight bigots need to stay home...preferable in the closet. I love her and she is great and talented. Helen

In my opinoin, Melissa is a very beautiful woman, however, anytime a woman is vastly over or under weight there is criticism. I am certain she either has a "thick" skin or is developing one. As long as she is healthy and can move freely in her chosen craft, then I say good for her! We can't all be the same, then life would certainly be boring.

I'm sorry but whoever thinks she looks bad is completely wrong. She is a very beautiful person and I don't see how someone can sit there and say something like that to someone else. That only makes me think that the person who is saying horrible things only has insecurities about their own self and want to throw their self anger and issues onto someone else. A friend of mine had a picture that says, "Before you judge me, make sure you're perfect." I would say the same thing to anyone who has anything horrible to say about anyone, cause no one is. Meliisa McCarthy is an amazing, funny as hell, and beautiful woman so people like Rex need to get a life and find something better to do than talk about people in that way.

I love Melissa, and have since Gilmore Girls. She's an extraordinarily talented comedienne, and from everything I've heard, a delightful human being. Her weight has no bearing on these things. I would hope that she does lose some weight at some point though, just because I worry about her health, and I do not want her to be sick, or worse! Her weight, however worrying, should not be even mentioned in a film review. It's not a medical review, the only thing they should be commenting on is how well she performed in the film.

I absolutely love Melissa McCarthy! Ever since GIlmore Girls, she has been one of my favorite actresses. I loved Identity Thief! It was funny, and entertaining as it was meant to be. I don't think I have ever seen her in a show/movie that I haven't loved. Really excited to see The Heat.

I loved Melissa in 'Bridesmaids', but she really stepped up to the plate in 'Identity Thief'! She is a wonderful comedian and her chemistry with Jason Bateman is palpable. She is not an actress that puts on airs of superiority like many of the other 'thin' actresses. Her down to earth persona strikes a chord with the average girl/woman. I never understand why people have to judge the person by their looks, because our outward appearance can change dramatically in such a short period of time, whereas our inward character basically remains more or less the same. As a person who has never had a slim figure I know what it is like to be personally judged 'as a whole' for my outward appearance, which is only half of me. Not only is Melissa a wonderful actress and comedienne, but she is also a person whom I would enjoy getting to know as a friend.

Absolute class.... And short career? Over a dozen years working on vast and varied projects isn't a short career. I've loved her since Gilmore Girls and loved her even more after Samantha Who. She's played so many different characters that I have a hard time believing that someone who calls her career "gimmicky" has done his homework.

I'm always dumbfounded why men like Jack Black don't get called out for his size, but any woman over a size 4 is made fun of. Isn't the average size woman in America a size 14? It's high time we judge people's worth on their character and not on their size. "Bride's Maid" is my current McCarthy film, and I can't wait to see "The Heat" when it is released!

Oh wow, it's so hard to understand people sometimes... I Love, Melissa McCarthy as an actress! I think she is beautiful and find her humor hysterical and her personality warm and kind. I hope she always stays true to who she is on the inside and doesn't let untrue and unkind words, bring her down. Everyone is different, and has different opinions, which I can respect, but I wish I didn't have to hear about the negative/mean things people have to say about other people. Until we're all perfect, we shouldn't really be pointing out other's "imperfections". No one, can live up to everyone's standards.

I love Melissa and everything about her. She's a beautiful and talented woman and i love ALL her movies. Our society is so screwed up that if you are not the "perfect" size, you must be judged. Yes she's on the heavy side, but that's part of what makes her who she is. As long as she's healthy, that's all that matter. If SHE chooses to lose weight, then great but let it be HER decision, in the mean time, we just need to give her her standing innovation because she deserves it.
