Tips for rocking a DARK lip: A Message to Lorde

Friday, February 14, 2014

After this years Grammy Awards, I will never look at a dark lip the same way again. Lorde's performance makeup was interesting. She wore a dark purple lip, but she looked WAY older than she actually was. Seeing her performance, I thought she was in her 30's maybe even low 40's, but when researched I found out she was 17. Now I know a lot of it has to do with lighting but here's how I think she could have tried to avoid looking ghostly.

Tip #1: Add bronzer! The number one reason her lips looked too harsh is because she was really pale. That, combined with the lighting aged her a bit. I don't think she need a contour, I think she needs an all over warmth to balance out the cool lip and give her skin a little life.

Tip #2: Define those eyes! A swipe of mascara may pass on the runways, but I think a simple black eyeliner, top and bottom, whether it be smudged or sharp, will make the lip color look less shocking.

Tip #3: Go a shade lighter on the lip color. I'm all for funky colors and a dark lip - but a light lip on someone else may look like a dark lip on her so I would recommend going with what's dark for YOUR skin tone.

What did you think of her look that night?

While I agree on the eyes, I could not disagree more about the bronzer. I have a skin tone similar to Lorde's, and--listen up, makeup artists--pale girls don't tan! Professional makeup artists always reach for bronzer to "warm up" my skin and it looks so ridiculous they end up ditching the idea. Bronzer is meant to highlight areas where the sun would hit for a natural glow, and that's not what happens with pale girls--we don't tan, we burn! Besides, I know it's hard to fathom, but some of us actually like our fair skin and are quite comfortable in it.

Patti, have you never seen a goth before? Do you realize what a point is and how you have so severely missed it?

Patti, while I respect your opinion, Lorde has said many times that her look is, overall, very goth. Dark lipstick is a goth staple. I have a skin tone silimar to hers and I wear a dark lip nearly everyday (typically MACs "Cyber") and hardly where bronzer or eyeliner. While I do like a nice contour or bronzed look, it can be too harsh on someone wearing a dark lip, so I generally skip it. Ella (Lorde) also has rather thick brows, so eyeliner, bronzer, and the lipstick might look over-powering on her (I'm not saying it would for sure, I'm just going by my own personal opinion), especially on someone so young. But anyways, I fully respect your opinion and thoughts, I just think you missed the mark here.

Hi Patti...I totally agree with your point...and with the other comments too :)...yes, she loves goth makeup, but, I have seen very good examples of that, with some of your very accurate suggestions, and women look alive and sexy... not dead!! or even worst, like a goth granny, which is Lorde's case :) sorry, but it is true.

I really disagree with your assertion that she 'needs' bronzer. It's a look that she's going for and I dig it. I am also a very pale person with a love of dark lips, so I may be biased. Also, 90% sure it's meant to be shocking. Considering the pose and all.
