Breast Cancer Awareness: Decrease Your Risk
Breast Cancer Awareness: Decrease Your Risk
MONDAY, OCTOBER 01, 2012

It's officially October! Which means it's officially Breast Cancer Awareness month. We already do our best to make you look even more beautiful with our cosmetic line, but this month we also want to help you protect that beauty! We'll be releasing several posts all month to educate our beloved Elfettes about which preventive measure to take and how to decrease your risk of developing breast cancer.

According to breastcancer.org, 1 in 8 women in the US will develop invasive Breast Cancer sometime in her lifetime. That's almost 12% of the female population! Let's try to knock that number down by taking these preventative steps:

1.     Less Drinking:

A recent study showed that hormone-sensitive tumors (about 70% of tumors) were linked very strongly with the intake of alcohol. Consuming alcohol on a regular basis is believed to increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Many doctors recommend cutting the consumption of beer, wine and liquor to 2-3 drinks/week.

2.     More Exercising

Not everyone loves the gym, but fortunately you can still get the benefits by performing 20 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week. The more often the better! Make sure to keep your heart-rate above normal. The more vigorous the exercise the better. Yes, the kind that gets you really sweaty. The more you exercise, the stronger your heart will be, which helps cut your cancer risk.

3.     Weight control

Overweight and obese individuals have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, especially if the excess weight is put on as an adult. Overweight women also have a lower breast cancer survival rate than average weight women. Even if you’re not overweight, it’s a good idea for all women to develop and stick to a fitness plan. Plus, exercise and eating right makes you feel good!

There are a lot of free programs you can use to create and track your health and fitness progress. Here’s one of our favorites!

4.     Self Examine Regularly

Make a monthly reminder in your phone or on your calendar to perform a self breast examination every month. This app reminds you every month automatically! Here’s a great guide on how to do this yourself and you can always ask your doctor any questions about instructions and techniques. Don’t be alarmed if you find something, it may be nothing, but call your doctor anyway. Once you get use to the tissue in your breast, you’ll be able to tell if something is off. You may even detect a change before a mammogram find it.

5.     Visit the Doctor

Even if you hate going to the doctor, make it a habit, especially if you’re over the age of 40. Early detection of breast cancer is the closest thing to prevention so once you turn 40, schedule a mammogram every 1-2 years. The chances of beating breast cancer are much higher if it’s detected early on because, chances are, the tumor can still be removed if it’s small. The 5-year survival rate can be as high as 98% for the earliest-stage detection, but is only 27% once the disease has progressed to the advanced stage. If breast cancer runs in your family, you may want to think about going once you turn 35. Make it a point to discuss your prevention plan with doctor, no matter what age you are, it’s never too early to develop a plan.

What other preventative measures are you taking to decrease your risk of breast cancer?

Whats Hot: Kate Upton Bites Back
Whats Hot: Kate Upton Bites Back
MONDAY, JULY 16, 2012

Kate Upton, despite her revealing day job, is becoming a role model for young women. A self-proclaimed “anti excess” blogger, SkinnyGossip.com, attacked the gorgeous Sports Illustrated model’s voluptuous look calling her “thick” and “vulgar” among other things. She even went as far to compare her to a cow and claimed that Kate has become “well-marbled” at the ripe age of 20. While everyone in the lime light will always have a few extra eyes of scrutiny watching her, Upton dealt with the situation head on. She commented back with this, "I'm not going to starve just to be thin. I want to enjoy life and I can't if I'm not eating and miserable."

This isn’t the first time she’s lashed back to a comment about her body. Kate has been going against the grain of the fashion industry since she started her career in modeling. She began as a self-proclaimed plus-size model and used social media to create a buzz around herself, rather than getting in with a modeling agency like most runway stars. She loves her curves and refuses to get rid of them just to conform to what the fashion industry believes is beautiful, ultimate thinness. Instead, she has ultimate confidence and sticks up for what she believes is right. She’s been put down by many talent agencies and brands, including Victoria’s Secret whose top talent booker, Sophia Neophitou, said, “She is too obvious. She’s like a page 3 girl. She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and the kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

Much to their surprise, and many fan’s delight, Upton is regularly on the cover of popular magazines, including Vogue. In regards to her career she said, “It was hard when I was first in the industry and people were like: ‘No, you are fat.’ But my body is something that you have to work out and eat healthily for.”

What do you guys think? Is she happy and healthy or are the critics right?

Weight Loss Question
Weight Loss Question
WEDNESDAY, MAY 05, 2010

Q:  The question I get all the time.“I'm trying to lose weight, tried several diets and not having any luck. What would you recommend?”

A:  In my opinion, there's only one true way to lose weight. Eat fewer calories per day than your body uses. Everyone burns calories just by being alive, it's called a basal rate. Once you find this rate out, you can plan the amount of food and exercises needed to burn more calories than you consume. (Shape Magazine's website has great tools and a community to help you find this out). Now, if you have a lot of weight to lose (more than 25lbs) you're likely to see loose skin and sagging where it was once needed. With proper nutrition, your body has the chance of reducing this occurrence to some extent - the more weight you have to lose, the less your body can do to return to a desired state - and I would obviously recommend my firming crystallines as a take along with your work out to add to water.

Reaching Your Weight Loss Goal Beautifully
Reaching Your Weight Loss Goal Beautifully
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2010

With the holiday season behind us, the "Holy cow! What did I do to gain these 10 -20 lbs" season is staring us right in the face. There are a few things that you can do to make yourself look great and feel great, if you're here, regardless of how much work you're planning to get back into shape. The most important thing you should know about weight loss, is that there is only one true means of losing weight (without surgery). You must burn more calories than you consume each day. The trick is, you have to eat enough not to starve your body, as this will cause your body to store every available calorie you eat so when your routine lightens, the weight will flood back onto your frame. Who wants that? In addition to successfully keep the weight off and be healthy it's important to make sure what you eat contains the nutrients to keep you healthy.

So what's a skin care guy telling you what you probably already know. For skin, this exercise thing you do, creates a harsh environment for your skin and prevents a natural glow from being able to emerge! Just think about all that excess sweat and dirt you expose yourself to while your pores are opening to release the heat. So let's say you've lost those excess pounds. Guess what's shown up in its place? Sagging, dull, blemished and uneven toned skin. This can be true on your body, as well as on your face. Oh, and because you didn't get the nutrients you needed during this process, everything you eat now seems to make you gain weight twice as fast.

So what can you do to keep your skin looking gorgeous during your commitment to lose those pounds and keep it off when you've reached your goal?

Keep a commitment to exercising- even a little bit every day even after you reach your goal. You've probably heard that doing cardio exercises are great for burning fat fast. When you reach your goal, DO MORE! Walking is one of the simplest, cheapest and most effective ways of doing this. Continue to do anything from 10 minutes or 30, you can go fast or slow, you can walk on the flat or on hills - it can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. It can even be skipping the elevator and taking a flight of stairs as you come to work.

Now that you're working on the hard part, here's the easy part....

First, to keep your skin glowing and looking trim and toned, use a descent exfoliator that will help to keep your skin fresh and healthy. I can't recommend enough my Firming Body Polish  . Many of my celebrity clients use it because of how well it works to make skin look flawless -something their livelihood depends on. It is made with just the right amount of antioxidants and other skin care goodies that will leave your skin perfect!

Second, while you're doing the hardest of exercises while trying to get back into shape, you can kill two birds with one stone by drinking my Firming   or Replenishing Skin Balance Waters. You'll stay hydrated and boost your body's own ability to build a radiant glow when you're done. The best part is, not only is calorie free, preservative free, sugar and sodium free, it delivers the antioxidants key to keeping you looking beautiful.

I hope your new year is an amazingly beautiful one!
