Pre Teen Makeup 101 - by Ciaran Blumenfeld
Pre Teen Makeup 101 - by Ciaran Blumenfeld
SUNDAY, JULY 26, 2009

I remember my first encounters with my mom’s makeup so very fondly. There were the “free with purchase” lipstick cast-offs that I got to keep and wear, on special occasions only. When I turned 13, my mom passed along a tube of mascara. It was a slim silver wand of midnight blue that caked and gunked and yet I felt like I was practically a grown up when I wore it.

Now I have a 12, almost 13 year old of my own. But no gunky mascara to share! For the last year our family policy has been that she is allowed to wear light colored lip gloss, and face powder. But eye makeup and anything else is reserved for on stage appearances (dance, theater etc) only.   Problem is, her peers have been layering on the eyeshadow, mascara, liner and blush since the beginning of 6th grade. There are days at drop off that I wonder whether we are here for elementary school or for the matinee performance of Rent. I’m thinking that half the parents did not see their kids leave home this way. This is a school bathroom a.m. hack job, Fuschia eyeshadow is not for the faint hearted. Or 12 year olds. This is, in fact the school rules. No eyeshadow until 7th grade.   Guess what grade my girl is entering in fall? And guess what make-up item she is itching to get ahold of? I’ve caught her eyeing the goods lined up on my vanity. I believe the time has come to buy her some make up of her own. No fuschia for her though. I’m not letting my girl go in there looking like a clown. We’re sitting down this summer and playing with make up. I’m teaching her how to choose colors and how to use tools.   I’ll be honest with you though, she doesn’t need makeup. Not the lipgloss, or the eyeshadow. Her long dark lashes and naturally beautiful coloring are a picture of what great artists strive to achieve. Which is exactly the sort of thing my mother said to me at this age. My daughter is perfect in her present beauty. But if she’s going to experiment, I’m there for her.. It’s hard to imagine at the moment, but there’s a fair chance she might get even more gorgeous as she grows up,
