Loving the Hot Rollers
Loving the Hot RollersTUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2009 I am clearly late to the hot rollers party. I know most girls experiment with them in middle school and high school as many of my friends did. I had wavy hair as a kid that was cut into the worst shag haircut ever, so hot rollers were not for me. As a matter of fact, I had never used rollers of any kind until this year. My 16 year-old daughter is much more adept at all things beauty than I am. She taught me how to use a flat iron, and then she bought hot rollers. I was fascinated watching her do her own her and practice on her friends. One day my hair was particularly flat and I needed a lift. I have succumbed to the Keratin Straightening Treatment which has changed my life cutting my blow drying time in half, but after day two, my hair is flat as board. My daughter wasn’t home, so I borrowed her rollers and tried it myself. It was love at first curl. My hair went from flat to bouncy in 15 minutes and I was ecstatic. We have the Conair Ion Shine which cost about $29.99. I love these rollers and have not given them back since I borrowed them. It allows me to get an extra day or two out of my blow dries and I can change up the looks easily from straight and bouncy to big, volume sexy. Any tricks to getting your hair super smooth inside the rollers, or getting the clips in just right? Pamela Weinberg is co-author of City Baby, the best selling NYC parenting guidebook. Safely Sun Kissed
Safely Sun KissedTHURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2009 Summer is definitely over, and so is my tan. I have been sun obsessed for as long as I can remember. Some people love ski vacations and winter, but the only vacation for me is one on a beach in a lounge chair. My collection of bikinis and sarongs far exceeds that of my sweaters. I began tanning with my mom when I was in middle school. I would sit out for hours with a homemade reflector made with aluminum foil and a double-sided album (Billy Joel’s Glass Houses comes to mind) and baby oil. Just thinking about this makes me cringe. Still, I do like how I look with a tan, so I continued to lie out in the sun over every vacation and weekends all summer. A visit to my dermatologist this fall convinced me that my sun obsession has to stop for good, but I still wanted that tan look.I had tried self-tanners in the past, but never felt that I got a “real” tan with them and instead was left looking a bit orange, and smelling like self-tanner for days. I had received a sample of a self-tanner at a department store and decided to give it a try. It was love at first application. This product Kanebo Sensai went on easily, had no scent and left me with an even tan and glowing skin that lasted for days. I am hooked and it has eased my transition from sun worshiper to fake tan lover. Do you like how you look with a tan; and how do you achieve that look in the dead of winter? Have you ever tried a self-tanner and is there a trick to applying to it your body to make it even? Pamela Weinberg is co-author of City Baby, the best selling NYC parenting guidebook. Are Ponytails the New Black?
Are Ponytails the New Black?FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2009 ![]() I ate dinner recently at a very trendy new restaurant in New York City with a couple of girlfriends. The bar was packed and we had a long wait for our table. My two friends are divorced and were looking around at the men. And I couldn’t help noticing the women. Tons of women wearing ponytails out for dinner! This was surprising. I wear my hair in a ponytail for exactly two occasions: to exercise and to go to sleep at night after I have blow dried my hair. I would never dream of wearing my hair pulled back to go out at night. But the women looked great and were sporting their ponytails in all different ways. The looks ranged from older women with shorter hair severely pulled back with only an elastic holding it together; to twenty-somethings with messy ponytails carelessly tied up with a clip; to the more carefully done looks with the ponytail holder fastened perfectly at the nape of the neck.
Most looked sexy and gorgeous and it made me want to try it for myself which I will once I get down a technique that looks ready for a night out instead of a morning at Spin class.
Have you worn your hair in a ponytail to go out at night? Is it because you didn’t have time to do your hair or because you love the look? Any tips on how to make one that looks fantastic?

Gear Up Your Career This Fall
Gear Up Your Career This FallTUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2009 Back to School: three little words that conjure up so much. When you are a kid, you think about backpacks, number two pencils and soggy tuna fish sandwiches. As an adult, even if you aren’t going back to school, September always feels like the beginning of the year. We refocus at work after having a lazy August, break out the fall wardrobe, and start planning for the upcoming quarter.
I work from home and have certain rituals which start my Fall back-to-work routine. I have found September to be a great time to sharpen your pencils and update your skills. A few things I plan to do this fall are:
* Set Goals: time goes quickly and setting deadlines has helped me to structure my day/week/month.
* Keep current: I will keep up-to-date on my industry (moms and babies and careers) by bookmarking key websites and blogs and perusing them each day.
* Network: working from home sometimes makes you feel cut off from the outside world. I plan to get out more this fall to industry events/conferences to network more.
* Utilize social media to promote my business: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn. I am on all of them, but know there is a lot more I can do to promote myself. Check out Dan Schwabel’s book Me 2.0, which is on my fall reading list.
What are you planning to do this fall to get your career in gear?
With focus on pregnancy to pre-school years, this easy-to-use guide offers sage advice on the many aspects of bringing up a child in New York City. Friendly and informative, it guides parents on how to find and hire your nanny, select a pediatrician and the pros and cons of a doula; where to find the best bargains on baby clothes or that one-of-a-kind crib; where to hold a birthday party on a budget; and many other issues that often confound the new and not so new parent. An added extra, City Baby offers busy New York City parents many “insider” tips designed to save time and aggravation. Publisher Rizzoli has expanded the City Baby franchise to Brooklyn, Chicago, and Los Angeles with more cities to follow.
