The Age of the Plus Size Models?
The Age of the Plus Size Models?SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2009 Recently there has been a lot of discussion regarding plus size models hitting the scene in magazines, ads, and on television. What makes a model plus size is becoming a lively topic on a lot of talk shows and in news stories. I am an expert at being plus size. I have been plus size most of my life. I can remember being plus size since I was about 9 years old. I have always struggled with my weight and still do today, but now with a different perspective. I no longer let my weight be the ruler of me. What is inside matters most. I am sure that people see me and think 'oh my goodness, look at that fat lady!' And don’t get me wrong, I am not happy with my weight or the state of my health, and I think about it a lot, but I try to not let it stop me from being who I am or doing what I do. I used to let it stop me. I used to let people get the best of me when I got called names all throughout school. These people could obviously ONLY see the outer me and not my inner beauty. Today people are able to see the REAL me, and accept me for who I am. More and more people are now struggling with weight and with obesity, and therefore, more people are understanding my struggle since they are going through it as well. There are a lot of people I know who weren’t plus size throughout school, but they are now, so it does catch up to you if you are not careful about what you eat or how much you exercise. People are debating about what size defines plus size models, and whether or not there should even be plus size models. I wish they would not judge these models by their size, but by their inner beauty. When it comes to age, people often say that “age ain’t nothing but a number.” So then, why should we have to go by the number when it comes to modeling? Why can’t models be judged by their inner beauty and personality? I understand that it has to do with the argument that you cannot see inner beauty in pictures, but I believe you can. If a woman is confident and feels great about herself, it radiates and her beauty shines through in pictures, in ads, commercials, and in everything that she does. Models shouldn't be chosen by size, and shame on the modeling companies for doing so. And a huge HOORAY to the companies who are responding to the need for the representation of plus size women in fashion magazines, and for taking the initial steps to change the outdated ways of ONLY using a size 4. A beautiful smile and graceful curviness will sell me clothing, accessories. Simply flaunting what she has on and looking REAL can totally sell me any day. And if this means she is a size 4, then that's great, but if she is a size 24 that is fantastic too. Beth Davis, blogger of theplussizemommy.com, is a 34 year old Christian mommy of 4.
